Give thanks for everything... or in everything?

By Josh Blakley

Friends, "In everything give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you." I Thessalonians 5:18.

Let me throw something at you that might be a little different than how you would normally interpret this scripture. Look at the first word. "In", not "for"! "In everything....." God is leading us to give thanks "in" everything, not "for" everything.

Now I'm not saying you shouldn't be thankful for things, not saying that at all. The year 2020 has been full of difficulties to say the least. Most all of us find ourselves "in" the middle of all the craziness. What the scripture is trying to tell us is to be thankful "in" the mist of those crazy difficulties. Do not let problems, failures, losses, political unrest, sickness, and disappointments hurt us from still be thankful to him! During the dark times God wants our focus and faith "in" him to be strong, rather than our focus being on our circumstances.

No matter the circumstances you are facing, continue to be thankful! We are in a great community and we are surrounded by great people. May my Columbia Magazine friends have a Happy Thanksgiving! --Josh

Carol Perkins: A Wild Turkey Tale

Previous column: A visit to Carol's Kitchen

By Carol Perkins

"Head for the hills," Papa Tom ordered his wife and the children, playing in an open field near a busy road. He circled around them, opened his impressive wingspan, and pushed them forward. "They'll be after us in a few days, so we better get out of here."

His youngest daughter stood firm in the neighbor's yard. "I'm not going to run. I'm so fast they can't catch me!" she proclaimed. not knowing who "they" were. With one raised eyeball from her mother, she shrugged her shoulders and followed the family into the thicket where they lived.

As the night drew near, the children gathered around their mother. "When will it be safe for us to go out again? I don't like having to hide under these bushes."

Thanks to LWC: My journey to play professional soccer

Spencer Moeller played soccer for Lindsey Wilson College in 2016 and 2017, before graduating with a degree in sport management. He recently signed to play soccer professionally with the Los Angeles Force. Moeller credits Ray Wells and the unique LWC Soccer Program for putting him on the path to success.

By Spencer Moeller

It was a phone call on a Tuesday afternoon. I was just released from my second NCAA D1 college and I was still undergoing rehabilitation for a torn meniscus from the previous season. I was alone, injured and mentally clocked out. After playing soccer for 15 years I was on the verge of hanging up the cleats. I had made my peace with this game. But a funny thing happened on that Tuesday in the spring of 2016 that would forever change the trajectory of my life.

A call from the head coach of the men's soccer team at LWC was the turning point in an otherwise mediocre career up until that point. Ray Wells expressed his interest in me becoming a Blue Raider for the 16/17 season and the potential he saw in me as a player. Signing my scholarship to play for LWC was one of the greatest decisions of my life.

During my time in Columbia I had the unique privilege of playing alongside soccer players from all around the world. The large majority of the other 1,200+ men's soccer programs in the country are filled with domestic talent, but Ray Wells and his coaching staff have done an incredible job over the past 20 years in recruiting international players. I was one of only 4 Americans on the team which made my experience at Lindsey truly unforgettable.

KSP: Black Friday sale supports Trooper Teddy project

By Sgt. Billy Gregory

Frankfort, KY - It's nearly Black Friday and the Kentucky State Police (KSP) hope shoppers will include a Trooper Teddy Bear on their Christmas list this year. The bears go on sale Thanksgiving night at 6pmET, and will sell for $15 through the holiday weekend. All proceeds from the sale benefit the Trooper Teddy Project, which provides teddy bears to children in traumatic situations such as a car crash, exposure to drugs, or domestic abuse cases which frequently result in the arrest of a parent.

Trooper Teddy Bears will be sold for $15 plus shipping during the promotion. Citizens have the option to pick it up their bear for free at KSP Headquarters in Frankfort or at any KSP Post.

For those interested in purchasing a bear or making a tax deductible contribution to the project, citizens should visit trooperteddy.square.site/s/shop or shop through Ebay at ebay.com.

KSP Spokesman Sergeant Billy Gregory says the 'Trooper Teddy' Project is designed to develop trust between officers and children.

"Often times, we are meeting these children on their worst day," says Gregory. "Whether they are scared or nervous from the circumstance they are dealing with, the bear seems to immediately resonate with them. That connection builds trust and opens the door to communication between the child and the trooper."
