Gov. Beshear urges Kentuckians to act

By Crystal Staley/Sebastian Kitchen

Frankfort, KY - Gov. Andy Beshear on Sunday implored Kentuckians, especially those in red zone counties, to follow the recommendations to reduce the spread of COVID-19, with a continued escalation in cases that includes Kentucky's highest test positivity rate in more than half a year and the highest number of cases in a week by almost 500 cases.

"This virus is spreading in communities in every corner of the commonwealth, and everyone, from our businesses and schools to individuals, must do their part to stop the spread and save lives," Gov. Beshear said. "Without each of us doing our part, the rampant spread will continue to take more Kentuckians. Let's come together as Team Kentucky to defeat this virus."

Gov. Beshear reminded community leaders, schools, businesses and residents in the state's hardest hit areas to follow the Red Zone Reduction Recommendations (PDF). Thursday's 80 red zone counties should follow the recommendations Monday, Nov. 9, through Sunday, Nov. 15.

Pfc. Harold Leonard Burton: Freedom is Never Free

By JIM

The opening days of November 1945 found America still slightly giddy from a hard won victory in the late war. Shoe rationing had just ended, and in an incredible display of pent up consumer demand, no fewer than 300,000 customers had placed orders for the forthcoming 1946 Ford automobiles, price and delivery date unannounced.

Several Adair County men, recently separated from armed service, had arrived back home in recent days. This group included six year veteran Sylvan Turner; Earl S. Conover, Edwin Downey, and Cotton Durham. Capt. W.E. Harris, Jr., stationed at the Separation Center, Camp Atterbury, Indiana, soon would join the stream of former servicemen coming home.

And, after months of waiting, one family learned their kinsman would return, exact date unknown, in a flag-draped coffin.

In the summer of 1943, Harold Leonard Burton of the Christine - Purdy section of Adair County, then eighteen years old and a student at Columbia High, pledged to defend America as a member of the US Army. He first went to Camp Haan, California, before training elsewhere, and received furlough for a visit home in August 1944. That fall he sailed for Europe as a member of the 398th Infantry Regiment, 100th Infantry Division, 7th Army. Come February 1945, his parents received notification Pfc. Burton had been awarded the Infantryman Combat Badge.

Community prayers requested for Wayne Hatcher

The family of Wayne Hatcher requests prayers for his strength, and freedom from pain, as he focuses on healing from cancer at his beautiful Adair County farm.

Known to all as an unassuming, hard working man who would give the shirt off his back to anyone in need and never tell about it, Wayne deserves all the blessings that can be bestowed on him.

Letter: Montpelier Post Office and General Store

Larry Jones writes:
I was taken there by my Grandfather in the early 60's and I remember Miss Willie sitting in the back of the store by the stove talking to some locals and then going in the side room to do her Postmaster duties. It was a simpler time and so many times have wished I had went back after moving away... I drove by there some 60 years after moving... So happy to see it still standing.
Comments re: The Old Montpelier Store and Post Office

Larry, thanks for writing. Unfortunately, that photo is a few years old, and in April of this year, the decision was made that the old store would have to be torn down. Frequent contributor JIM eloquently expressed what many were thinking at the time: Montpelier Post Office & General Store building.

Letter: Are we still in the red?

Marcus E Pierce writes:
This was the lastest red map. We all went out of the red.
Marcus, thanks for writing. Unfortunately, the state maps are incorrect for some of the local counties for the last few days, and most of the local counties are still red after all. The LCDHD mentioned on Thursday that they expected this, but we failed to get it to the front-page part of the story that we posted:
It should be noted that, due to the recent surge in cases, and due to a medical absence of one of our key staff, we are behind entering a significant number of cases into the state system. While our local numbers are current (as reported in our news briefs, and on our webpages), the numbers reported by the Governor's Office and posted on the state's COVID-19 webpage will be significantly off. We have reported this through the State Department for Public Health to the Governor's Office. In any event, please utilize our local data for the time being.
-- LCDHD COVID-19 Public Information Brief 11/5/2020
Yesterday's brief from LCDHD, posted this morning, indicates that they're catching up on the data backlog, and everyone should definitely be taking red-zone precautions in the coming week, because "Eight of our district's ten counties are now in the 'red-critical' range: Adair, Casey, Clinton, Cumberland, Green, Pulaski, Taylor, and Wayne. This leaves only McCreary, and Russell in the "orange-accelerated" range."

LCDHD COVID-19 Public Information Brief 11/7/2020

By Amy Tomlinson
Lake Cumberland District Health Department

This was the worst week for the state and for the Lake Cumberland District in terms of new cases since the onset of the outbreak. Lake Cumberland's new case rate exceeds the state average. We have 172 more active case today than we did last Saturday. We are at our peak number of hospitalizations at 43; 2 more than last Saturday. We experienced 3 deaths this week.

Eight of our district's ten counties are now in the "red-critical" range: Adair, Casey, Clinton, Cumberland, Green, Pulaski, Taylor, and Wayne. This leaves only McCreary, and Russell in the "orange-accelerated" range.

We have largely caught up on our delinquent data entry into the state system. We are hopeful the state reports will begin to better align with ours early next week.

Please, let's all continue to do our part in slowing the spread of COVID-19 by wearing our face coverings, avoiding crowds (especially in confined spaces), social distancing when around others, increasing our hand hygiene, increasing our general sanitation, and by avoiding the touching of our faces.
