Governor urges Kentuckians to renew fight against COVID-19

By Crystal Staley/Sebastian Kitchen

Frankfort, KY - On Wednesday, Gov. Andy Beshear encouraged Kentuckians to renew their fight against COVID-19, while celebrating positive budget and economic development news for the commonwealth.

"Our number of hospitalized people goes up every day. These are a lot of Kentuckians who are fighting for their lives," said Gov. Beshear. "Let's keep lighting our homes up green. There's a lot of pain out there and it's hitting everybody. We're thinking of every family, whether we know you or we don't. We hurt with you and we grieve with you."

Today, Gov. Beshear announced that based on the recently released Quarterly Economic and Review Report issued by the Office of the State Budget Director, he anticipates that his administration will be able to balance the current fiscal year 2021 budget with no further budget cuts to state agencies or to the state's Road Fund. He further announced he anticipates finishing fiscal year 2021 on June 30, 2021, with more than $460 million in the Budget Reserve Trust Fund, or "Rainy Day" Fund, the highest total for the fund in state history.

"Today's news means that critical areas such as education, health care and public safety will not suffer from midyear cuts, but will instead be fully supported at their budgeted amounts," said Gov. Beshear. "A number of factors that helped in balancing the budget include better-than-expected revenue collections through the first four months, which has been supported by federal COVID-19 relief payments to Kentucky's businesses and individuals as well the substantial investment in health care spending in response to the pandemic."

LCDHD COVID-19 Public Information Brief 11/3/2020

One death in Adair and 17 new cases were added on Election Day. The total case count increased in the ten county health district by 105 - Adair: 17; Casey: 9; Clinton: 6; Cumberland: 1; Green: 6; McCreary: 5; Pulaski: 25; Russell: 4; Taylor: 18; and, Wayne: 14.

New case growth rate is: 1.017. This means our total case count is projected to double every 40.54 days. This was the most new cases ever added in a single day.

By Amy Tomlinson
Lake Cumberland District Health Department

We added a record number of new cases today, 106. We have the most active cases ever, 644. Nine of our district's ten counties are now in the "red-critical" range: Adair, Casey, Clinton, Cumberland, Green, McCreary, Pulaski, Taylor, and Wayne. Only Russell is in the "orange-accelerated" range. With the increased volume of new cases we are experiencing daily, the health department is struggling to keep up with investigations and contact tracing. Cases coming in during the afternoon are sometimes being pushed until the next day. If our capacity becomes exceeded and we are not able to contact trace effectively and quarantine high-risk close contacts, the chances of increased community-spread goes up substantially.

At this point, the safest thing to do would be for everyone to assume that you are going to encounter a positive case. Therefore, please, let's all continue to do our part in slowing the spread of COVID-19 by wearing our face coverings, avoiding crowds (especially in confined spaces), social distancing when around others, increasing our hand hygiene, increasing our general sanitation, and by avoiding the touching of our faces.

It should be noted that, due to the recent surge in cases, and due to a medical absence of one of our key staff, we are behind entering a significant number of cases into the state system. While our local numbers are current (as reported in our news briefs, and on our webpages), the numbers reported by the Governor's Office and posted on the state's COVID-19 webpage will be significantly off. We have reported this through the State Department for Public Health to the Governor's Office. In any event, please utilize our local data for the time being.

Salvation Army Angel Tree Program needs sponsors

By Debra Cowan

Dear Adair County Community,

The Adair County Service Unit of The Salvation Army will once again be providing the Angel Tree Christmas assistance program for our community. This program provides Christmas gifts to qualifying Adair County children ages six months to fifteen years and is made possible with community support.

While the program was successfully conducted in a different manner last year, we are returning to our traditional program this year due to COVID 19 restrictions.

In order to be successful, we need community members, churches and other organizations to "adopt an Angel".

At your request, a paper Angel with information about an Adair County child will be delivered to you or your organization.

Thanks from Adair County Board of Elections

The Adair County Board of Elections would like to extend a hearty and heartfelt thanks to all of the volunteer poll workers that worked Election Day. You worked tirelessly to ensure a smooth, efficient and lawful process. You started early and ended late. Our poll workers are some of the most important people at an election. We also want to thank the staff of The Clerk's Office, our local media, Adair County Fiscal Court, and the Adair County Judge Executive and Staff.

It takes a whole team to make elections run smoothly, and as 2020 has shown us, voting isn't confined to a single day.

Special thanks to the poll workers that served during our Early Voting. They spent tireless hours, some days without lunch or breaks, to handle the volume of voters that turned out for Early Voting. They went above and beyond to make Early Voting a success.

This year they braved an unpredictable virus and gave of their time and themselves to make this election possible for the voters of Adair County. We appreciate the work and sacrifice of everyone involved. Thank you to each and every poll worker for serving our county and for defending our voting rights.

Thank you,
Adair County Board of Elections
  • Lisa Greer, Adair County Clerk
  • Josh Brockman, Adair County Sheriff
  • Vicky Pike, Democrat Representative
  • Ricky Collins, Republican Representative

Thank you to all who worked election 2020

By Adair County Judge Executive Gale Cowan

Special thanks go out to Adair County Clerk Lisa Greer, her staff, the county election board, and all of our poll workers.

It has been a very long election, not just “day” but “month” with the early voting. With covid, short staff, and a building closed.

You all hung in and conquered the task. I’m proud to call you all friends and coworkers!
