ACSO: Single vehicle accident on Hwy 55 N

By Sheriff Josh Brockman
Adair County Sheriff's Office

On Thursday, October 29, 2020, the Adair County Sheriff's Office responded to a single vehicle accident around the 4300 block of Kentucky 55 North.

Upon arrival, deputies located a single vehicle on its side. Preliminary investigation determined a 2007 Lincoin MKZ traveling North, operated by Ashley Bunch, 33, of Jamestown KY, left the right hand shoulder of the roadway and struck an earth embankment. The vehicle then overturned and struck a guard rail, subsequently sliding on its side into a Kentucky Transportation Cabinet electronic sign and trailer.

Weather conditions and the roadway surface were determining factors.

Kudos on outstanding Silent City Tours again this year

By Wendy Butler Burt

The Adair County Genealogical Society outdid itself in this pandemic year by presenting an excellent on-line Silent City Tour. We spectators might have missed personal interactions during the tour, but the presentations still tied us together as a community.

Has thought ever been given to taking at least part of the tour out of the city into some of the many small cemeteries in the county? I know of many graves within a short hike from our house -- everything from the grave of a Union Soldier whose unit saw a lot of Civil War action to a lovely little cemetery deep in the woods near Crocus Creek that contains a tombstone engraved "Gone but not Forgotten."

Adair County is filled with interesting stories....

Rita Murrell writes:
In response to the vintage Halloween ad for the Economy Store in Campbellsville Ky, this was where I had my first job in the early 1950s. Pay 37 cents per hour. Good experience.

Early November 1940: Odds and ends from around Columbia

By JIM

In the general election of 1940, Franklin D. Roosevelt lost Adair County but won the national popular vote by a comfortable margin and swept the Electoral College with a staggering 447-82 victory. Locally, attention centered on the county Board of Education races. With the final ballots tallied, Margaret Nell carried Division No. 2 over Marvin Keltner, Ella Bryant garnered more votes than Carter Bryant in Division No. 4, and E.R. Willis won the nod over Wood Grider in Division No. 5.

C.M. Kelsay and Owen Miller announced plans to open a building supply company at an early date, the operation to be located "in the old tobacco warehouse in the rear of the Kelsay Bros. Filling Station just one block off of Campbellsville Street." An ad for their business (Columbia Building Supply) appeared later in the month and invited the public to "see us for quality building supplies of all kinds. . .also [a] complete line of feeds, grains and hay."

Marshall Beauty Shop (phone 1919B) and the Margie Ann Beauty Shop (phone 116B) offered the latest in hair styling; Grissom Funeral Home (phone 106B) and Stotts & Cheatham Funeral Home (phone 81A or 81B) had ambulance service; and those possessed of a chilly house could get the "amazing new Duo-Therm Power-Air" oil heater for only $77.50, easy terms available.

Fall Back: Remember to adjust your clocks

Don't forget to check your clocks this morning. Phones and computers will likely have adjusted themselves overnight, but mechanical clocks will need to be set back an hour.

LCDHD COVID-19 Public Information Brief 10/31/2020

By Amy Tomlinson
Lake Cumberland District Health Department

Eight of our ten counties are now in the "red-critical" range: Adair, Casey, Clinton, Cumberland, McCreary, Russell, Taylor, and Wayne. The other 2 are in the "orange-accelerated" range of community-spread, Green, and Pulaski.

This was another record-breaking week. This was the highest week of new cases for both the state and Lake Cumberland. Last week we added 440 new cases, this week 444. While this week was one of the sharpest increases in new cases for the state, our numbers are much closer to last week's. So that much, at least, is good. We do have 79 more active cases this week compared to last Saturday. We are also still at our highest number of hospitalized cases, 41. We experienced 1 death this week.

Won't you please, do your part in slowing the spread of COVID-19 by wearing our face coverings, avoiding crowds (especially in confined spaces), social distancing when around others, increasing our hand hygiene, increasing our general sanitation, and by avoiding the touching of our faces?
