Phillip Coffey - Four Thirty Nine

By Phillip Coffey

My moment of leisure on Columbia Public Square.
Where men like Morgan and Wolford rode his steed.
Twain's Momma first saw her first sparkle of light.
Jessie James men up and shot poor Mr. Martin.

All entering and gathering - friends and foe meet.
The whittlers a-shaving his cedar - never they 'pine'.
Ghost and Goblins sharing their worthless pleas.
Everything starts and finishes at 'four thirty nine'.

Gov. Beshear urges Kentuckians to be safe

By Crystal Staley/Sebastian Kitchen

Frankfort, KY - On Friday, Gov. Andy Beshear asked Kentuckians to make a plan now for a safe Halloween, as COVID-19 cases rise across the commonwealth and the nation.

"Remember, the more cases, the more people in the hospital, the more people in the ICU and the more people who die," said Gov. Beshear. "It's time for a coordinated community effort with everybody on board. Now is the time for leadership, not for excuses."

To view the Kentucky Department for Public Health (KDPH) Halloween guidance visit kycovid19.ky.gov.

Gov. Beshear and KDPH commissioner Dr. Steven Stack also reminded community leaders, schools, businesses and residents in the state's hardest hit areas to follow the Red Zone Reduction Recommendations (PDF). Thursday's 68 red zone counties should follow the recommendations Monday, Nov. 2, through Sunday, Nov. 8.

"We absolutely must double down in terms of applying caution," said Dr. Stack. "With nearly 70 counties now in the red zone, I am pleading with you to observe both Halloween and Red Zone Reduction Recommendations. Lives and livelihoods literally depend on all of us doing our part."

COVID-19 Q&A from LC Health Department leaders

Each week the Lake Cumberland District Health Department takes questions from media and the public. Following is one of the recent topics, more will run through the days ahead as we learn and respond to COVID-19:

From Amy Tomlinson

Question - Case numbers are going up but hospitalizations are not. Does that mean cases are less severe as the virus spreads across populations?

LCDHD Answer - We can’t say for sure right now. According to some research, how severely one reacts to a virus can be impacted by how large of a dose of the virus to which one was exposed.

Perhaps with more people masking and social distancing, when transmission happens, the dosage of the virus being transmitted may well be smaller than before the public knew to take the masking and distancing precautions.

With a smaller dosage of exposure, one’s natural defenses have a better chance of fighting it. The age of people contracting the disease has decreased and since they are younger, we aren't seeing the severe cases like earlier in the pandemic.

LCDHD: 88 new COVID-19 cases on 10/29/2020

By Amy Tomlinson
Lake Cumberland District Health Department

We are at our highest level of active cases at 569. Seven of our ten counties are now in the "red-critical" range: Adair, Casey, Clinton, Cumberland, Russell, Taylor, and Wayne. The other 3 are in the "orange-accelerated" range of community-spread, Green, McCreary, and Pulaski.

Please, let's all continue to do our part in slowing the spread of COVID-19 by wearing our face coverings, avoiding crowds (especially in confined spaces), social distancing when around others, increasing our hand hygiene, increasing our general sanitation, and by avoiding the touching of our faces.

Where are cases spreading: The most common areas where we are seeing cases tied are (in descending order): Schools, Businesses, Family, and Places of Worship.

New Cases: We report that our total case count has increased by 88 today: Adair: 11; Casey: 14; Clinton: 3; Cumberland: 6; Green: 3; McCreary: 12; Pulaski: 12; Russell: 10; Taylor: 7; and, Wayne: 10.

Our current new case growth rate is: 1.016. This means our total case count is projected to double every 44.21 days. The most new cases we ever added in a single day was on 10/28/2020 when we added 91 cases. Today's new cases include:

Letter: Squirrels chew the paint

Guinda S Miller writes:
We experienced that problem when we painted our deck with Olympic Rescue deck paint. A more recent product is OK.

You need to research the composition of your paint. If the paint has animal fat or salt added, the squirrels and other animals well chew it.
Comments re: Mystery: what could be attacking the porch?
Thank you! This is great to know and we're happy to share the word about the tricky paint. - LW
