Beth Ann Cravens, 56, services to be Sunday, 01 Nov 2020 Beth Ann Cravens, 56, lived by the motto that life should not be a journey to the grave with intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body but rather skid in sideways, toes tapping to music, wild flowers in hand, body thoroughly worn out, and screaming, "I love your gutz, what a ride!" She was the daughter of Dr. Paul and Jean Cravens of Indianapolis, granddaughter of Granvil and Fronia Cravens of Sano, and of E.P. and Audrey Waggener of Columbia. She was born on May 29, 1964, the fourth of four children. She was the niece of Fay McKinley, Annette Richards, Arthur, Ralph and Ed Waggener, Hazel Arnold and Bea Burgess, Olva Burton, and Arvin Cravens. Beth was the fourth of four children to die too young from cancer. Her lifetime was filled with loving her family and longtime friends, which to her meant the same thing. It was the Cravens way. She excelled at being an inspirational daughter, sister, aunt, and dog mom. Article continues... click title or click here to read whole article. 2020-10-29 13:04:24 | Comments | Printable version

Carol Perkins: Fall Driving Trip, Part 2 Previous Column: Fall Driving Trip, Part 1 By Carol Perkins On the second leg of our journey through West Virginia and Virginia, we arrived in Virginia Beach for three nights. I called the Holiday Inn to make sure our balcony room was secured. We were to be on their highest floor- the seventh. As we neared, I plugged in the address, but Guy had already spotted the sign. Stop One: wrong Holiday Inn. I suspected it might be when I saw it had at least fourteen floors. The desk guy sent him up the road to another Holiday Inn. Wrong one again. It had at least twelve floors. If we had followed the Google Map, Guy wouldn't have had the adventure of maneuvering his long bed truck in and out of three hotel parking lots! The next day we set out to explore. Article continues... click title or click here to read whole article. 2020-10-29 06:41:46 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Carol Perkins

LCDHD COVID-19 Public Information Brief 10/28/2020 By Amy Tomlinson Lake Cumberland District Health Department After 3 days of lower cases than last week, we shattered our all-time new case high. On 10/22/20, we added 80 cases; today, 92. It is telling to note that it took Lake Cumberland 168 days before 1% of its population had tested positive for COVID-19. It has only taken us 56 days to get to 2%. Of course, we do not know how many additional people have had the disease but were never tested. Over the last several weeks many area groups have asked us to review their plans for "community events" such as festivals, parades, firework shows, holiday events etc. Without fail, these groups share with us plans that align with the Governor's guidance. Almost equally without fail these events fail to unfold as planned and consistent social distancing and masking does not take place. Therefore, the health department will no longer review these types of event plans. It will be the health department's standing policy that we advise against any such social gathering. While we do not have the authority to prevent these types of events, we can no longer spend our time reviewing plans that consistently fail during execution. We will simply direct such "event planners" to the state's guidance. Of course, we will continue to work with businesses, long-term care facilities, schools etc. to put together prevention and post-exposure COVID-19 plans.
