Gov. Beshear: Communities Must Work Together

By Crystal Staley/Sebastian Kitchen

Frankfort, KY - On Wednesday, Gov. Andy Beshear said community leaders, schools, businesses and families listed in red zone counties each Thursday on kycovid19.ky.gov should follow new recommendations the following Monday through Sunday to stop the spread of COVID-19 in their communities.

"It takes an entire community to protect the most vulnerable, to keep our schools open and to keep our economy running," said Gov. Beshear. "What we need to see is that when a county hits red, everybody comes together in a coordinated effort."

When a county gets out of the red zone, schools can reopen, businesses have more flexibility, nursing homes can accommodate visitors and Kentuckians are able to enjoy more activities with loved ones. Most important, fewer people get sick or die from COVID-19.

"This will not just protect nameless, faceless people somewhere in Kentucky. It will protect the people you see every day," said Gov. Beshear.

"This is the worst our incidence rate map has ever looked and every indication would suggest that it's going to get worse before it gets better," said Dr. Steven Stack, commissioner of the Department for Public Health. "This is a human problem. A global problem. Everyone wants it to be over. But if we get cavalier about it, it's like being at a casino - the house always wins. The virus is the house. When everyone flaunts the guidelines, they don't work."

Circuit Court Clerks help children in need of lifesaving transplants

Despite the many challenges 2020 has brought to communities across the state, the Kentucky Circuit Clerks' Trust For Life has continued to grow the Kentucky Organ Donor Registry in an effort to save and heal the lives of those waiting on an organ, tissue, or cornea transplant, including the many children on the waiting list.

"The continued support from our residents means a great deal to so many in need, including our children," says Dennis Loy, Adair County Circuit Court Clerk. "Since 1992 more than two million Kentuckians have joined the Kentucky Organ Donor Registry. Those registrations and support are critical for our ongoing efforts to save the lives of as many patients as possible on the transplant waiting list."

Letter: Cemetery tour

Vonnie Kolbenschlag writes:
I, too, am impressed and have enjoyed learning about persons now resting in our city cemetery. The actors, the videoing and the background music added to the good performances. Thanks to all for sharing your talent and time to research and memorize the stories that told about these people. The videos can be used again for other events and is one of the good results of this pandemic.

CU celebrates first virtual Homecoming

By Joan C. McKinney

Campbellsville, KY - Although there weren't thousands of people on Campbellsville University's campus for her 2020 Homecoming, the university's first virtual one was a success, according to Ashley Fox, director of alumni relations.

"Even though we couldn't gather on campus for this year's Homecoming, I could still feel the connection to the CU family through our virtual events," she said.

Deer-related accidents increase in the fall

Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife

Frankfort, KY - The arrival of autumn signifies the approaching end of another year as nature prepares for winter dormancy. However, with beautiful fall colors also comes an increase in vehicles encountering deer in roadways.

Drivers should be aware of deer throughout the year, but the months of October through December bring a spike in deer-related accidents. Shorter periods of daylight and cooler temperatures trigger the deer breeding season - known as the "rut" - putting whitetails on the move.

"November is usually the top month of deer activity due to the rut," said Kyle Sams, acting deer and elk program coordinator for the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources.

Letter: Wishing for more virtual Silent City Tours

Doug McCammish writes:
Wow! Great job so far by Ronald Rogers and Mike Watson. Great opportunity for "remote" folks like me.

Can't wait to see Lee Ann's video! Now I wish there were videos of all the cemetery tours in years past.

Thanks!
Doug

Doug, I just watched Lee Ann's portrayal of Mary Jane Page Blakeman, posted on Columbia Magazine a bit ago, and what a great job she did! Even though I'm right here in Columbia, after watching the first three, I too am wishing for more more virtual Silent City Tours - a great way to learn our history and genealogy! - LW

Letter: Not everyone was wearing a mask

Carol Edwards writes:
The day I voted, I was wearing a mask and was greeted at the main entrance by a worker who was also wearing a mask. She directed me to the basement to vote. When I was entering the room, another worker was exiting. She was not wearing a mask nor was she carrying one. A few moments later she came back to the voting room still without a mask, all the while laughing and talking with various people in the room. After many minutes, I noticed she had finally donned a mask. Would that person be one of the positives?

Judge's office closed today and tomorrow, 28-29 Oct 2020

By Gale Cowan
Adair County Judge Executive

The Adair County Judge's Office (only this office, all others staying the same) is completely closed today and tomorrow, October 28 and 29, 2020. I was notified late Tuesday night that we had someone in our office for a meeting on Monday morning that ended up testing positive for the COVID19 virus on Tuesday.

Even though our building is closed to general public, we are continuing with county business and at times it is necessary for people to still be in our offices by appointment.

Everyone in the office was social distancing and wearing mask, but I still want to go on the safe side and close until we can get the area fogged/disinfected on Thursday.

Spiders from Adair County, continuing the discussion

By Miss Donna Rieder

I was very interested in seeing Dr. Downen's spider photos, and was hoping you could post a couple photos of spiders I've spotted on my evening walkabouts in the Clifty Creek Farm.

I wear a headlamp after dark, and enjoy seeing all those twinkling eyes of the wolf spiders shining like diamonds in the light!

The woods are a wonderful place to be after dark! Clifty Creek Farm is located on White Oak Church Road in Adair County.
