Letter: Jerry Antle is a true hometown hero

Steve Coomer writes:
I would like to call attention to a true hometown hero! Jerry Antle of the Adair Road Department goes way beyond his duties of overseeing Adair Jail inmates picking up roadside refuse and litter.

On days of no crew, he can be found cleaning litter from our roads by himself!

Jerry was in a horrific traffic accident while overseeing his crew, but despite lingering pain from his injuries there he was this morning in a misty rain, alone picking up trash on 61 North!

And there was a LOT of trash!

We are commanded to love everyone

Harold McKinney's thoughts shared:

"What I took from the online service at the Presbyterian Church Sunday morning:

"Love your neighbor, every one of your neighbors.

"Hard to do.

"Hard for me to love the person I heard bragging about never having worn a mask during the pandemic.

Red Zones asked to prepare weekly COVID-19 Reduction Plan

Each Thursday's incidence rate map published on kycovid19.ky.gov determines red zone counties for the following week.

By Crystal Staley/Sebastian Kitchen

Frankfort, KY - On Tuesday, the Governor said that community, long-term care and school leaders and administrators, as well as Kentucky families in red zone counties, should prepare a weekly COVID-19 reduction plan based on each Thursday's incidence rate map.

Thursday's red zone map, published on kycovid19.ky.gov, provides communities and families time to plan and accommodate the new red zone reduction recommendations and other existing guidance, including for schools, the following week (Monday through Sunday).

The Governor said schools already follow the Thursday map for when a county enters the red zone.

"If you're in a red county, anything you don't need to do, don't. Stay home as much as possible," Gov. Beshear said. "Schools shouldn't be the only ones that are taking these steps. When you coordinate these two responses, the schools and the community together, we can get the best result."

Quarles wants to expand meat processing with CARES funding

By Sean Southard

Frankfort, KY - Agriculture Commissioner Dr. Ryan Quarles sent a letter to Governor Beshear today requesting he allocate $2 million from the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act to expand meat processing in Kentucky and reduce reliance upon out-of-state meat processors.

"Early on during the pandemic, our food supply system was tested and we saw some temporary shortages of meat products on grocery shelves," Commissioner Quarles said. "The Kentucky Agriculture Development Board moved quickly to establish a fund to incentivize meat processing expansion in the Commonwealth using dollars set aside to diversify our agriculture industry, nearly all of which has been committed. I have since learned that other states have used CARES Act funding to support agriculture. Today I have requested the Governor allocate $2 million of Kentucky's $1.7 billion in CARES Act funding to help prevent meat shortages in the future."

Legislators consider paid parental leave for state workers

By Jim Hannah, LRC

Frankfort, KY - A legislative panel took testimony today on measures that would grant state employees paid parental leave and annual cost of living raises.

Bill Request 344 would allow state employees a paid leave of absence of 12 weeks for the birth or adoption of a child. Employees would have to work for the state for at least 52 weeks to be eligible for the proposed benefit.

"This is not unique to Kentucky," Rep. Jason Nemes, R-Louisville, said while presenting the prefiled bill to the Interim Joint Committee on State Government. "This is Kentucky getting on board with what Republicans and Democrats are doing across the country and in Washington."

  • Non-critical government offices to operate virtually
  • Reduce in-person shopping; order online or curbside pickup
