Seeking information for Adair Co. Basketball history

By Daniel Hedges

Hello, I have always wanted to write a book. I want to do a book on the culture, heritage, and history of Adair County Basketball. It will be more of a story that brings to life people, stories, games, teams, coaches, and characters. It would not be a simple, concrete records account.

This will not be a quick endeavor. I would expect it would be every bit of two to four years. However, I will need people's help. If you have any interesting stories, facts, or information as a fan, coach, player, etc., please email it to daniel.hedges@adair.kyschools.us.

If you have any artifacts, newspaper clippings, etc. that I could review or use (not to keep), please email me.

Finally, I need to gain access with someone that was close (a family member) to John Burr. If you have that contact information, please email or text/call me at 270-282-3175. If this endeavor will succeed, I am formulating ideas on the 5th region following the same concept. Thank you. --Daniel Hedges

Letter: Tannins

Marie Freeman writes:
Not a pretty color, but must be remembered... Tannins are generally responsible for brown colors and only appear when the leave is about dead.

They are sometimes referred to as 'phytochemical', which is a non-nutritive plant chemical that has protective or disease preventive properties.

Governor: Red zone counties need to work together

Adair, Green, Metcalfe, Russell and Taylor Counties are all in the red zone currently

By Crystal Staley/Sebastian Kitchen

Frankfort, KY -. (Oct. 26, 2020) - Today, Gov. Andy Beshear reported 953 COVID-19 cases in Kentucky and issued new red zone reduction recommendations to stop COVID-19 spread and protect Kentuckians in the 55 counties currently in the red zone.

The Governor said today marked the highest number of new cases ever reported on a Monday as cases are at an all-time high across the country and in the commonwealth. Hospitalizations and deaths are also increasing nationally and in Kentucky. New red zone recommendations provide direction on how communities can come together to defeat COVID-19.

"Every Kentuckian in a red zone county needs to work together to protect one another by following these recommendations," Gov. Beshear said. "Now is not the time to give up - this is a time when more people are going to be at risk. It is a time when we need everyone to do better."

Red zone counties are those with 25 or more average daily cases of COVID-19 per 100,000 residents. Red zone counties are updated daily on the incidence rate map on kycovid19.ky.gov. The Governor said when a county turns red, we are already asking schools to go virtual, we ask for sports to pause and we restrict visitation in long-term care facilities.

Motorists encouraged to be safe this Halloween

By Erin G. Eggen

Frankfort, KY - This Halloween, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet's (KYTC) Office of Highway Safety is partnering with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to remind motorists that "Buzzed Driving Is Drunk Driving."

"It's been a tough year for all Kentuckians but we must remain vigilant and continue making responsible choices to keep each other safe," said Gov. Beshear. "Halloween falls on a weekend so there's potential for indoor gatherings to peak. I want to encourage Kentuckians to celebrate safely by following health guidelines and making plans for a sober ride home if you plan to drink. A few preventive measures can mean the difference between life and death."

"We all share the road and can make it safer for everyone by practicing safe behaviors like buckling up, putting the phone down and driving sober to help prevent crashes, injuries and deaths on Kentucky roadways," said Transportation Cabinet Secretary Jim Gray.

Hearts Bleeding - a poem and its origin

By Phillip Coffey

Hiding from Nazi - the COVID -19 quarantine.
Taking shelter from masses in my boxed-in cove.
Kinfolk bring hot cornbread and soup cuisine.
Keep wearing your mask - It sure ain't over.

Curtail the selfish choices of others not healing.
Repeating,'think of others' never redundant.
Worldwide Pandemic of dying - hearts bleeding.
Loving and caring for others - always incumbent.

Phil shares the story behind the poem: My younger sister Deb Atwell and her husband Rick have had a very stressful month or so. Rick had knee surgery recently and then he become very ill with COVID-19. He has suffered mightily. He could not have physical therapy following surgery. Family and friends have been very helpful.

Anglers from 15 states competed at Holmes Bend this weekend

By Ron Presley

Crappie anglers from fifteen states traveled to Green River Lake to participate in the October 23-24, 2020 Crappie USA (CUSA) Classic. Anglers had fished throughout the year to qualify for the event.

Given the 2020 Pandemic, all parts of the 24th annual event were conducted following social distancing and mask wearing requirements. Following registration, the traditional pre-tournament meal was served in to-go containers so everyone could choose where they wanted to eat. The Jim Blair Community Center was set up with socially distanced tables and chairs for those that wanted to use it, but everyone was required to wear a mask while in the building.

A total of 122 teams fished the event--43 in the Pro Division and 79 in the Amateur Division. A total of $126,000 was distributed to the winners.

History Monday: Election 2020 Different from Past Ones

By Mike Watson

The election on this pandemic year, 2020, is far removed from previous contests. I am not referring to the issues, but to the physical process of casting a ballot. We all know that voting started early with mail-in ballots and in-person voting at the Courthouse Annex. I believe we all yearn for the 'good old days' when election day was a big event for those who followed the process.

A look at the past: Election Officers, 1942--

The Adair County Election Commissioners in 1942 were: H.H. Allen, Bert Harper, Sheriff H.B. Taylor, and County Clerk W.E. Harris. The primary in those days fell in August, in 1942 on August 1st. This election was the first time there were thirty precincts in Adair instead of the regular twenty-nine. South Columbia had more registered voters than the rules allowed, so No. 1 and No. 2 were created. SC1 voters were to vote in the regular place, H.T. Walker's shop; and SC2 voters would cast ballots at T.A. Furkin's store near the Grade School.

The following is a list of voting precincts and election officers--naming the clerk first, judges second, sheriff last:
