June 26, 1979 Around Adair with Ed Waggener

The article below first appeared in the June 26, 1979 edition of the Adair County News. Topics included the gas crisis in Christine, A.L. Sinclair's cabbage crop, a bit of a building boom, the loss of a prize dairy cow at AnnBarLyn Farm, and the history of the Jamestown monument. --Pen

Biggest event since the air disaster
A.L. Sinclair says it was the biggest event in Christine since Ralph Collins had an airplane crash approaching Streeval Field years ago. It happened when the Chevron truck brought 500 gallons of gasoline to Olle McQueary's store. "We had gas lines as bad as any on TV," A.L., who lives across Highway 206 across from McQueary's store, said. Sinclair said that the highlight of the day was when three gentlemen with mule teams and wagons, who had been out driving for the fun of it, lined their vehicles up in the queue of thirsty cars.

The big head at Christine
A.L. is one enterprising man. He's promoted horticulture in Adair County as much as any other one person. He has a big crop of cabbage ready to harvest right now. There are 9,000 heads of cabbage in his fertile one-acre plot. Sinclair anticipates five cents a pound when he sells the cabbage in Monticello. He figures on a gross of $2250 for the acre, and counts on netting around $1500 on the crop. Not bad for a new Adair County crop.

New bulldings
Gas problem or no gas problem, there is plenty of construction activity on Jamestown Hill and out. Russell Road. The basement is poured for the new First National Bank building at the corner of Wright Drive and Russell Road. Further east on Russell Road, Wid and Mitch Harris have a new barber shop building underway. They will be moving to make way for a possible move by South Central Mortgage (The Bank of Peco), to the Harris Barber Shop building on Jamestown Street. South Central Mortgage is primarily owned by Columbia businessman Randall Pyles. The London, Kentucky, owners of the Sine Turner property on Jamestown Street now have the seven acres cleared of buildings and trees. Something must be going to happen there. They surely wouldn't be out there just playing with their bulldozers.

In 1930, state representative Ralph Gilbert was on the stump both for his own re-election and for the Democratic interests in Kentucky in general. He previously had served four consecutive terms as a U.S. Congressman before losing the seat in the 1928 election.

This ad appeared in the October 28, 1930 Adair County News. The following week, the paper referred to his October 31 Courthouse speech as "one of the best addresses Mr. Gilbert has ever made in Columbia."

The screamer headline in the November 11 News told the tale of the election's outcome: "Democrats Sweep State and Nation."

Gov. Beshear: Highest ever Sunday cases reported

By Crystal Staley/Sebastian Kitchen

Frankfort, KY - On Sunday, Gov. Andy Beshear said Kentucky unfortunately has set a new record for the highest number of new COVID-19 cases in a week since the pandemic began, with 9,335 positive cases this week.

The previous highest week of COVID-19 cases was Oct. 5-11, when the commonwealth reported 7,675 new cases. Today also marks the highest number of new cases ever reported on a Sunday, with 1,462 cases.

"Since March 6, Kentuckians have been fighting COVID-19, yet we are facing the highest number of cases ever reported on a Sunday, and the highest week of new cases. We must do better," Gov. Beshear said. "We all know the steps we need to take to stop the spread of this virus - wear a facial covering, wash your hands, stay six feet apart and limit gatherings and travel - let's all do these simple things to protect each other."

Yesterday, the Governor said he will be talking Monday about new recommendations to counties that are in the red zone, those with 25 or more average daily cases per 100,000 residents. The Governor plans to hold 4 p.m. briefings Monday through Thursday this week to update Kentuckians on COVID-19 and necessary next steps.

David Cozart speaks at Campbellsville University QEP session

By Chosalin Morales

Campbellsville, KY - David Cozart, a member of the Campbellsville University Board of Trustees, recently discussed racial issues students may face on Campbellsville's campus and how to be whole as a campus.

He encouraged students and administration to come together to discuss how they can make everyone feel welcome during these difficult times of a pandemic and racial division.

Cozart, who graduated from Campbellsville University with a Master's degree in Theology in 2013, said students and administration should listen and respond back to one another, while showing presence.

LCDHD COVID-19 Public Information Brief 10/24/2020

By Amy Tomlinson
Lake Cumberland District Health Department

This has been a very challenging week. After 5 weeks of having a slower growth rate of new cases, our district average once again exceeds that of the state average. Today, we are at our peak number of active cases, 505. At 31, we are 2 away from equaling our record number of hospitalized cases. Remember, the last time we were setting records like this, we were experiencing 3 nursing home clusters. Our present situation is community-spread. Also, we had 3 deaths this week. Obviously, with more cases comes more death and more hospitalizations.

At both the state (8,788) and local level (440), this was the highest week of new cases since the onset of the outbreak. Also, we have 83 more active cases today at 505 that we did last week. We continue to have 7 of our 10 counties in the "red-critical" range of community-spread.

We saw a lot of cases this week tied to school sports, church related events, and social events like weddings.

We can save lives and hospitalizations if, while we await a vaccine, we follow the guidance. Please, let's all continue to do our part in slowing the spread of COVID-19 by wearing our face coverings, avoiding crowds (especially in confined spaces), social distancing when around others, increasing our hand hygiene, increasing our general sanitation, and by avoiding the touching of our faces.
