Clean Diesel grants will help replace school buses By John Mura/Robin Hartman Frankfort, KY - The Kentucky Energy and Environment Cabinet (EEC) today announced the 2020 Kentucky Clean Diesel Grant Program, which will provide $298,708 to reduce diesel emissions by replacing aging school buses in the commonwealth. "That's why this news couldn't come at a better time: with these grants, our families will have cleaner air in communities across Kentucky and cleaner air as our kids get on and off school buses." Letter: Of spiders and their eyes Matt Downen writes: Almost all spiders have eight eyes including most of the ones you find around here. The family that includes brown recluses only has six eyes, there is one spider I know of in Africa that has two eyes, and there are some spiders that have no eyes at all! TJRH partners with new Sports Medicine program at ACHS By Stacey Biggs EVP of Marketing, Planning & Development As part of the organization's continued commitment to community support and economic development, T.J. Regional Health has become the founding sponsor of a new healthcare related academic program at Adair County High School. The Adair County Schools Sports Medicine Program launched this fall with more than 30 students enrolled. The program was borne out of a Work Ready Skills Grant the school system received in order to expand their career pathways in the health sciences. The purpose of career pathways is to build highly trained workforce to meet the current and future needs of local employers. The grant provided funding for materials and equipment to expand, but not for the Teacher/Athletic Trainer position that was needed to expand their health sciences offerings. That's where T.J. Regional Health was able to assist. As part of the new partnership, T.J. Regional Health pays half of the salary for a certified athletic trainer who also teaches classes in the Sports Medicine program. T.J. also provides a medical director for the program, sports medicine consultations, and other sponsorships for the school's extracurricular activities. Carol Perkins: Fall Driving Trip, Part 1 Previous Column: Splain and Countersplain By Carol Perkins After months of isolation, Guy and I took a driving trip through West Virginia and Virginia. We headed out in his thirteen-year-old Ram truck, because of the massive legroom, and brought along a large box of masks. (Carla questioned our sanity leaving behind two good vehicles and driving the loud truck instead.) Our goal was to avoid crowded areas and take scenic routes (which in some cases were hairpin curves). Because of the number of tourists, spots like Williamsburg, Yorktown, and Jamestown became "drive-bys." We chose this route for its beauty and two other reasons: the beach and the Naval base, where Guy was stationed back in the 60s. When the children were young, we took a trip to Washington, DC, and saw many of the same places we were going to revisit, but time brings great changes, and that is what we found. Nothing looked the same. On the first leg, we drove out of Kentucky and to Charleston, West Virginia (the mountains are gorgeous), where we spent the first night. We had breakfast at the famous Tudor's Biscuits. Article continues... click title or click here to read whole article. 2020-10-23 07:27:04 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Carol Perkins
Sad word of loss of Jan Campbell Overstreet The numbers of deaths from the Coronavirus just got more personal to many in Adair County. A popular member of the Walmart management team, a dear family member, a friend and a singer who appeared every November to sing for Veterans, died Thursday morning after having tested positive last Saturday. Her performing partners and friends said, "Jan Overstreet will be remembered by all of the Dream Depot group as our VP, a wonderful entertainer who loved her community with a never ending passion. She would help any person or charity she was able to, a Christian woman, a friend and a loving family member to us all. She could be counted on to help us anytime, any way, anywhere. We are deeply saddened." Fellow singer and friend Yulanda Bradshaw said, "She was good to me and always went above and beyond for her friends. She was warm, welcoming and had a great faith in humanity. She helped me to realize I have to do what's best for me and stand for it even when I have to stand alone. I'll never forget that conversation and I'll carry with me as always." 2020-10-23 04:37:31 | Comments | Printable version
