Gov. Beshear: Kentucky preparing for COVID-19 case surge

By Crystal Staley/Sebastian Kitchen

Frankfort, KY - Gov. Andy Beshear on Tuesday said as COVID-19 cases continue to increase, the state is beginning to prepare for a fall and winter surge in cases.

The First Family all tested negative for COVID-19 again today.

Today marks the fourth-highest number of daily COVID-19 cases reported in the commonwealth, including the day a backlog in cases was reported. This is also the first time since August that the state's positivity rate has been higher than 5%.

"Today's report is grim. It is grim because it shows that we are not just continuing in our third escalation, but this one is probably now the second most worrisome escalation we have seen surpassed only by that original March increase," said Gov. Beshear.

The Governor announced that due to this escalation, the commonwealth has renewed state surge preparations, including reviewing plans about the capacity in hospitals, examining possible hotel options, if needed, as well as the use of state parks. The state is also ensuring operational plans are in place to stand up a field hospital, if necessary.

National Teen Driver Safety Week is Oct. 18-24

By Erin G. Eggen

Frankfort, KY - The Kentucky Office of Highway Safety (KOHS) is helping empower parents to talk with their young drivers about the importance of driving safely. They are joining the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in their efforts during National Teen Driver Safety Week, Oct.18-24.

"I want our roads to be safe for all Kentuckians, including our youngest drivers. In just a few years, I'll be teaching my own kids how to drive, which is scary to think about for any parent," said Gov. Andy Beshear. "However, I know that by supporting my daughter and son and staying involved in their learning, I'll be able to keep them and the people around them safer. I hope all Kentucky parents take an active role in teaching and encouraging safe driving and that our teens understand how big this responsibility is."

"Parents have a strong influence on their teens, even as they grow older and become more independent," said Transportation Cabinet Secretary Jim Gray. "Because they are new to driving, teen drivers are a potential danger to themselves and to other drivers, which is why it is so important that parents take time to discuss safe driving practices with their teens."

PUBLIC NOTICE: Poll Worker tests positive for virus

By Adair County Judge Executive Gale Cowan

Adair County Clerk Lisa Greer was notified this morning of an Election Poll Worker that has tested positive for the COVID-19 Virus. We have said from the beginning that we would be transparent and up front with the citizens of our community.

This worker has NOT been in the building today and the building has been cleaned every morning before opening, every evening after we close, as well as during the day.

Any workers who were in direct contact with this worker has been sent for testing and must have a negative test result before returning to work.

This is the reason we take the steps we do, to hopefully stop the spread to others if or when someone is exposed. Poll workers are wearing the KN95 mask and behind a plexiglass shield.

Disinfecting spray and bleach water are used multiple times a day to sanitize and hand sanitizer is on site for anyone to use.

Close contact to a positive person is considered to be within 6 ft for more than 15 minutes. If anyone was in close contact with a positive patient, you will be contacted by the Lake Cumberland District Health Department.

Coleman award nominations open in Edmonton

From Gaye Shaw, Executive Director
Edmonton Metcalfe Chamber of Commerce

Shortly after revitalization in 1994, one of the very first major projects the Edmonton-Metcalfe County Chamber of Commerce established was a community service award. After some investigation it was learned that most communities bestowed some type of annual award on at least one of its deserving citizens.

After much deliberation, the chamber board of directors at that time, decided to establish the Jim C. Coleman Community Service Award to honor a Metcalfe County person who closely exemplified the service orientation of the late Jim C. Coleman.
