Miss Winston Arrives on Arbor Vitae

By JIM

These paragraphs quietly heralding Miss Noma Dix Winston's first arrival on Lindsey hill appeared on the front page of the August 31, 1938, edition of the Adair County News in an article headlined "Lindsey Wilson to Open Sept. 12 / Good Enrollment Expected:"
School officials anticipate an enrollment approaching 150. The Rev. Mr. White, who in former years has carried a heavy teaching load in addition to his multitudinous administrative duties, has been relieved of all classes except those in Bible history. His place in the history department will be taken by Miss Noma Dix Winston, of Sturgis, Ky., who will also take the place of Miss Mitchell Clarke as French teacher.

Miss Winston graduated with an A. B. degree from Vanderbilt University, Nashville, with a major in history. She received her master's degree at the University of Chicago and has done post graduate work at the University of Kentucky.

Letter: Would not second guess Noma Dix Winston

Yvonne Kolbenschlag writes:
Answer to Billy Joe: I would not second guess Noma Dix Winston, Billy Joe

A lot of people thought she spelled her name wrong also thinking it was 'Norma" not Noma. I think she told me that she taught Spanish, not French.

Letter: Observations on Ms. Winston's poem

Billy Joe Fudge writes:
Wow! Thanks for sharing, Vonnie. I've read it to myself and then a few times aloud. Each time the palette knife enriches the canvas even more.

I do have an observation I will share. Although there is always a danger of revealing one's lack of education or wisdomic insufficiencies when asking questions in a public forum, the reward is usually greater than the risk.

Ms. Winston capitalized "Junes" which might refer to the month or the popular variety of apple here in the Great Wooded South, either way would be understandable and proper.

However, she also capitalized "Grief", "Love" and "Silence". I would entertain rules, precedent or guesses from the Columbia Magazine family!

Noma Dix Winston: An Abandoned Road

Vonnie Kolbenschlag shares this poem written by a highly regarded Lindsey Wilson College History professor. Vonnie said she was inspired to share this by some of the recent pictures on Columbia Magazine.

An Abandoned Road
By Noma Dix Winston

Down from the windy and sun-washed hill,
And down through the maple glade,
Down where the aspen leaf is still,
It sinks to a mottled shade;
And there stretched out in glad release,
It lapses, blurred and blind
Into the infinite lonely peace
Of things gone out of mind.
