We can do this! Why do you think Green and Taylor Counties are beating Adair in Census reporting? Adair is behind the state average and behind both Taylor and Green Counties next door. We're even lagging behind our own rate of ten years ago. Check our Census status daily at this link - scroll down for the interactive map. Hover over a state for its score, you can also ask for individual counties. Both Judge Executive Gale Cowan and Mayor Pam Hoots have called for every citizen to fill out the paperwork online or in the mail or by phone to make sure we get our full count - because that means higher revenues in our future for road repairs, schools and more. We can do this! There are three ways to be sure your location is counted: - Online at www.my2020census.gov - By Phone: 844-330-2020 for English, or 844-468-2020 for Spanish. - Or by Mail: U.S. Census Bureau National Processing Center, 100 Logistics Avenue Jeffersonville, IN 47144. 2020-08-30 21:17:06 | Comments | Printable version

LCDHD COVID-19 Public Information Brief 08/29/2020 By Amy Tomlinson Lake Cumberland District Health Department In terms of new cases, this was the state's second highest week, but it was our highest week. Last week we added 216 new cases, this week 267. As far as active cases, we, again, had our worst week. Last week we had 266 active cases, this week, 378. We also experienced the most deaths this week at 8. Last week at this time we had 24 hospitalized cases, this week 20. However, death accounts for the difference, and that is not how we like to see our hospitalization numbers go down. Since the onset of the outbreak, we have had 4 people in their 50's to die. We have had 30 individuals in their 50's to be hospitalized; 9 in their 40's; 11 in their 30's; 5 in their 20's; 1 in their teens, and 2 under 10 (the remaining 120 have been 60 or older). I point these numbers out to dispel the myth that only "old people" get sick. We currently have 50 active cases that are either tied to the schools or are school age children. It is of great concern how much returning to in-person instruction could impact the spread of COVID-19 in our communities. Please help us slow the spread of COVID-19 by wearing your face covering, avoiding crowds (especially in confined spaces), social distancing when around others, increasing your hand hygiene, increasing your general sanitation, and by avoiding the touching of your face. Governor's Sunday update: Deaths in Russell, Green, Casey By Crystal Staley/Sebastian Kitchen Frankfort, KY - Gov. Andy Beshear on Sunday updated Kentuckians on the state's continuing efforts to fight the novel coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19). "With today's 462 new positive cases of COVID-19, this last week has been our single largest week ever for new cases of COVID: 4,503. It brings our total number of cases to date to 48,032," the Governor said. "That means we have to do better. With this number of cases we see more people hospitalized, we see sadly more people being lost. So please wear your mask, please make good decisions. This is a time when this virus is spreading aggressively." The deaths reported Sunday included an 82-year-old man from Lincoln County; a 66-year-old woman from Russell County; a 71-year-old man from Green County; an 80-year-old woman from Calloway County; an 83-year-old man from Harlan County, a 75-year-old man and an 87-year-old woman from Casey County; and an 82-year-old man and a 90-year-old woman from Fayette County. November 1, 1977 Around Adair with Ed Waggener The article below first appeared in the November 1, 1977 issue of the Adair County News. Topics included football, speedtraps, the Marching Indians continued success, the idea of a Garden Club, Tompkinsville congressman Tim Lee Carter, and some speculation about gubernatorial politics. --Pen By Ed Waggener When Jimmy Harper picked up Saturday's Daily Statesman and saw his daughter, Lisa, as one of the football experts, along with H. Hunter Durham, Hack Rowe, Mike Murrell, Don Moss, Travis Paul Scott, Paul Hayes, and Marshall Loy, he said, "I don't care if she is my daughter, I'll still have to say that she is a rose among a lot of thorns." So far, looking at the outcome of the predictions, she knows a lot more about football, too, even though the "experts" say it is beginner's luck. Watch out for the smokeys When the caravan of Adair County Marching Band supporters were traveling down the Western Kentucky Parkway to Greenville, Charles Sparks radioed to John Humkey, John, let's watch out for the 'smokeys.' If we can keep them off our tails, we make good time." It wasn't so funny to Lt. John Humkey, assistant post commander at Kentucky State Police Post 15, Columbia, where he is in charge of several "smokeys." But he took Sparks in good humor, and only answered, "Aw, that's enough, Charles." It was a great day The day at Greenville was great for the Adair County Marching Indians. They won their sixth straight first-place field competition award in as many contests, and their fifth straight parade band competition, at Greenville. Sparks said he heard a spectator from another town say, when Adair County hit the field, "Heck, can't anybody beat that band?" KY AG challenges Governor's COVID-19 Executive Orders By Elizabeth Kuhn Frankfort, KY - Attorney General Daniel Cameron has filed a brief in the Kentucky Supreme Court challenging the constitutionality of Governor Beshear's COVID-19 executive orders. The brief argues that the Governor's actions disregard the constitutionally mandated separation of powers, which strictly prohibits a Governor from exercising legislative power. The Governor's executive orders also violate Sections 1 and 2 of the Kentucky Constitution, which afford Kentuckians the right to earn a living and protects them from the accumulation and exercise of absolute and arbitrary governmental power. The case continues in the Kentucky Supreme Court, and oral arguments are scheduled for September 17, 2020. 2020-08-30 07:32:14 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Politics

Governor's Saturday update: Plan for Derby, Labor Day By Crystal Staley/Sebastian Kitchen Frankfort, KY - Gov. Andy Beshear on Saturday updated Kentuckians on the state's continuing efforts to fight the novel coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19). "Unfortunately, today, I'm reporting the fourth-highest number of positives for COVID-19 that we've reported since our first case on March 6," said Gov. Beshear. "Thankfully, our positivity rate is still below five at 4.59%." Even though it's not for a few more days, "now is the time to consider how you will celebrate Oaks, Derby and Labor Day in a way that allows you to share time with others while respecting the required masking and social distancing protocols," said Dr. Steven Stack, commissioner of the Department for Public Health. "As you may recall, as the number of new cases was leveling off months ago, Memorial Day and the Fourth of July resulted in celebrations and mingling. A noticeable spike in the number of positive COVID-19 cases followed. Then, the mask mandate went into effect and Kentuckians took extra care in social distancing and avoiding visits to other states known as 'hot spots.' This successfully plateaued our new weekly cases," Dr. Stack said. Article continues... click title or click here to read whole article. 2020-08-30 07:06:22 | Comments | Printable version

History: Who will remember? By Mike Watson Who will remember? "No person or event is forgotten as long as someone remembers." This statement echoes through my mind from time to time. Especially when encountering an individual or occurrence that sparks a long-lost moment, hidden from sight, shrouded. My memory is faulty; everyone's memory is faulty; memory is a funny, strange thing, sometimes it lies to us, or at least misleads us. A student of history--conventional, local, and family--my adult life has been spent searching; searching for information and artifacts that few others care anything about. Those same people may think me quite mad, but they often help me, too.
