Campfire part of evidence in investigation

2020-08-27 - Columbia, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com.
This campfire just at the back of the home is among many indications of activity going on in and around the Hurt/Foust property before the fire that burned the historic home down. An investigation is underway.

Letter: Thankful for the efforts of our local historians

George Kolbenschlag writes:
One more connection with the history of our town up in smoke. Whether an act of nature, an intentional fire, or a careless act of someone being where they should not have been, the loss of the Hurt-Foust House is a significant loss for our community. With the fire went an opportunity for our citizens, both young and old, to connect with the rather remarkable past of our small town.

Settled in part by revolutionary war soldiers, site of civil war skirmishes, home to hero's who fought in Two world wars, in Korea, Vietnam and the middle east, birthplace of state and national leaders throughout its history, and birthplace and long-time home of Mark Twain' mother (and the model for Tom Sawyer's Aunt Polly)--these are but examples of our proud history.

We should be thankful for the efforts of our local historians, including Mike Watson, for reminding us of that proud heritage. We should work diligently to instill in our young citizens the significance of their hometown, and a desire to protect that heritage. Burning down historic buildings is not in the best interest of any of us. We can spend our time and resources to find out just what caused that fire, and we should. But nothing will bring back the Hurt-Foust home. After more than 150 years, it is gone.

Letter: Thanks to Mike Watson

Laura Foust writes:
Thank you Mike for the clarification to the "conspiracy" seekers, as well as those who didn't have a clear understanding of the process. Also, thank you for the words of condolence. A huge influence into who made me what I am today, good or bad (dependent upon who you might ask) was destroyed on Sunday night, but the memories I have of that place I called home will live forever in my heart, and for my two children, they will also carry those memories. I'm sure my sister Cary and brother William would also say something very similar.

I think all the Hurt-Foust descendants would say the novel ended just as it should have. No one can ever again pillage and destroy what was our special place. Thank you again Mike for your place in that novel, and keeping the memories alive. --Fondly, Laura

Testimony outlines pandemic concerns in long term care facilities

By Jordan Hensley, LRC

Frankfort, KY - Emotions ran high during testimony on the COVID-19 death rate in long term care (LTC) facilities during yesterday's Interim Joint Committee on Health, Welfare and Family Services meeting.

Betsy Johnson, president and executive director of the Kentucky Association of Health Care Facilities (KAHCF) and Kentucky Center for Assisted Living (KCAL), shared data showing that more than half of Kentucky's COVID-19 related deaths have occurred in LTC facility residents.

"COVID deaths in long term care settings have nothing to do with the quality of the facility," Johnson said. "Some of the hardest hit facilities here in Kentucky are our best facilities. Facilities I have recommended to my parents. Finally, we still need help. We need a lot of help, mainly funding to retain our workforce, which has been decimated."

More funding is also needed for personal protective equipment and additional COVID-19 testing, Johnson added. According to her presentation, the top three reasons why staff have quit are: fear of contracting COVID-19, childcare needs and fear of exposing high-risk individuals at home.

State releases county unemployment data for July 2020

By Mike Clark/Kim Saylor Brannock

Frankfort, KY - Unemployment rates rose in 109 Kentucky counties between July 2019 and July 2020, fell in 10 and stayed the same in Carlisle County, according to the Kentucky Center for Statistics (KYSTATS), an agency of the Kentucky Education and Workforce Development Cabinet.

Locally, unemployment dropped year-to-year in Green County, and rose in Adair and all other surrounding counties. Despite the slight increase in unemployment, Cumberland County is still among the 10 counties with the lowest unemployment in the state.

On the Death of a Building

By Mike Watson

It has been said, "When an old person dies, a library burns down." This is a profound statement, containing volumes in one short, nine-word sentence. With the loss of any person, their collected knowledge goes with them. With the loss of an aged person, one who has lived through, experienced and seen so many events, great and small, their amassed knowledge is gone--unless there is a record of some type.

It is really no different for a structure. "If old houses could speak," is a term I often hear from those who appreciate old architecture of any era. The Sunday night fire at the historic home on Burkesville Street, known commonly as the Hurt-Foust House, which had been in the same family since the early 1890s, was the end of an era.

LCDHD COVID-19 Public Information Brief 08/26/2020

By Amy Tomlinson
Lake Cumberland District Health Department

We added 76 new cases today. Our previous one-day new case record was 55. Our growth rate is now 1.026 meaning cases are projected to double at just over every 27 days. We currently have 27 in the hospital, the most since the onset of the outbreak. Over 30 of our new cases were long-term care residents. As this is our most high-risk demographic, this increases the odds that the strain on our hospitals will rise.

The health department is nearing our capacity to respond effectively, meaning, if this level of increase continues, we will not have enough staff or hours in the day to complete effective contract tracing. Contact tracing is where we track down everyone who is a close contact to a case and quarantine them if they are high-risk. This slows the spread of the disease by "removing" those who are at high-risk of becoming a positive case from interacting with the public.

Please help us slow the spread of COVID-19 by wearing your face covering, avoiding crowds (especially in confined spaces), social distancing when around others, increasing your hand hygiene, increasing your general sanitation, and by avoiding the touching of your face.

FDA warns about hand sanitizer packaged in drink containers

Silver Spring, MD - The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is warning consumers about alcohol-based hand sanitizers that are being packaged in containers that may appear as food or drinks and may put consumers at risk of serious injury or death if ingested. The agency has discovered that some hand sanitizers are being packaged in beer cans, children's food pouches, water bottles, juice bottles and vodka bottles. Additionally, the FDA has found hand sanitizers that contain food flavors, such as chocolate or raspberry.

In one recent example of consumer confusion, the FDA received a report from a retailer about a hand sanitizer product marketed with cartoons for children that was in a pouch that resembles a snack. Drinking only a small amount of hand sanitizer is potentially lethal to a young child, who may be attracted by a pleasant smell or brightly colored bottle of hand sanitizer.

Hand sanitizer can be toxic when ingested. The FDA continues to see an increasing number of adverse events with hand sanitizer ingestion, including cardiac effects, effects on the central nervous system, hospitalizations and death, primarily reported to poison control centers and state departments of health. For more information, consumers should refer to the FDA's guidelines on safe use of hand sanitizer as well as a question and answer page.

September is National Preparedness Month

By Susan Dunlap/Barbara Fox

Frankfort, KY - The Kentucky Department for Public Health (DPH), within the Cabinet for Health and Family Services (CHFS), is reminding the public that households, businesses and communities can increase their preparedness by following this year's theme of Disasters Don't Wait. Make Your Plan Today during September - National Preparedness Month (NPM).

"The many challenges we've experienced in 2020 should remind every Kentuckian of the need to prepare for unexpected crises - within our own families and with our larger community, as Team Kentucky," said Gov. Andy Beshear. "In February, we had catastrophic flooding in eastern Kentucky. In March, our neighbors in Tennessee faced devastating and deadly tornadoes. Now, we're all facing the COVID-19 pandemic. Talk to your kids and family about what to do and where to go in different emergencies, because that conversation could save their lives."

The Governor emphasized the importance of taking COVID-19 precautions into account when developing preparedness plans. For example, keep extra masks in homes, offices and vehicles just like you might store non-perishable food and bottled water or a first aid kit.

This nationwide effort is organized each year by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to encourage citizens to prepare and plan for emergencies in their homes, business and schools.
