Letter: More on mushrooms

Marie Freeman writes:
I find the easiest way to identify mushrooms growing on a tree is to research shelf mushrooms. This is a link to the mushroom that I believe was posted by Pen: Trametes cinnabarina.

One of my most interesting finds researching shelf mushrooms is known as chaga. Makes wonderful tea. And the health benefits are enormous.

Another resource to help identify shelf mushrooms: greennature.com/shelf-mushrooms.

Green River Lake 2020 Virtual Lake Shore Cleanup

By Andrea Davis, Park Ranger

The US Army Corps of Engineers at Green River Lake and The Friends of Green River Lake will be sponsoring a Virtual Lake Shore Cleanup this year from September 1-30, 2020.

Volunteers can help to clean up the lake shore, in a socially distanced way. For each bag of garbage that volunteers clean up, they can be entered in a raffle on October 5 for a Kayak Prize Package worth $300. Entries are made by submiting two photos--cleaning trash, and then disposing of trash properly.

Here is how it will work:

1. Virtual Cleanup will run from September 1 to September 30, 2020.

2. All volunteers will need to sign a volunteer form. Find volunteer forms online at: Volunteer Agreement-Exp2021.

Filled out forms may be emailed, mailed, sent on our Facebook page or may be signed directly in the main alcove of the Visitor Center. Each volunteer has to have a signed form submitted with his/her first entry (or before) for his/her bags to count.

KY to receive $1.4M in Honda settlement

Frankfort, KY - Attorney General Daniel Cameron on Tuesday announced that Kentucky was part of a more than $84 million multistate settlement with American Honda Motor Co., Inc. and Honda of America Mfg., Inc. (collectively "Honda"), over allegations Honda concealed safety issues related to defects in the frontal airbag systems installed in certain Honda and Acura vehicles sold in the United States. The systems were designed and manufactured by Takata Corporation, a long-time Honda supplier, and were first installed in Honda vehicles in the 2001 model year.

The settlement, reached between the attorneys general of 48 states, territories, and the District of Columbia and Honda, concludes a multistate investigation into Honda's alleged failure to inform regulators and consumers that the frontal airbags posed a significant risk of rupture, which could cause metal fragments to fly into the passenger compartments of many Honda and Acura vehicles. The ruptures have resulted in at least 14 deaths and over 200 injuries in the United States alone.

Honda agreed to pay the participating attorneys general a total of $84,151,210.15, of which Kentucky's share is $1,420,697.65.

Consumers who own a Honda or Acura vehicle are strongly encouraged to visit Honda's airbag recall website at https://hondaairbaginfo.com, or call its Customer Service toll-free number at (888) 234-2138, to see if their vehicle is subject to a recall.

Today, August 26 and 100 years ago

By Yvonne Kolbenschlag

One hundred years ago, August 26, 1920, the 19th amendment to the United States Constitution gave women the right to vote! YEAH! Obtaining that right was the result of many women marching and putting up with punishments. Yes, some were even put in jail for wanting a chance to vote.

In the Trabue-Russell House display of photos is one given by Mary Pelly. It shows many women, dressed in white, standing in front of our historic courthouse. There is one little girl sitting in front with a smile on her face. Women often brought their young daughters, even in strollers, as they marched for the right to vote. Women, on these marches, wore white to show solidarity.

The women in the photo are not named, although one was Mary Pelly's mom. The photo also shows men, so there was support by some men.
