Letter: Agrees with Carol

Martha Berry writes:
I agree 100% with Carol on the recorded menus. It is aggravating enough to be put on hold with one menu, but being sent to another 3 or 4 with several choices each and still not get a human is poor business to say the least. GRRR! --Martha

Letter: Shelf mushroom

Marie Freeman writes:
These are considered shelf mushrooms from what I've read. My guess would be, color separated the Cinnabar Red Polypore from most other common shelf mushrooms. Young specimens have a striking cinnamon to red to orange color that fades over time.

Look for them on a variety of dead trees and stumps. --Marie

EPA Brownfield Grants can help restore blighted properties

By John Mura/Robin Hartman

Frankfort, KY - The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has released guidance for the FY 2021 Brownfield Grant applications. These multipurpose assessment and cleanup grants are available to local governments, quasi-governmental agencies and nonprofits to help assess, clean up and reutilize brownfields - blighted, abandoned properties that may pose environmental concerns.

"Our commonwealth is already an amazing place to live, but these grants help Kentucky's cities and towns reach their full potential," said Gov. Beshear. "Just as important, they help protect our people and landscape from potential environmental hazards."

An estimated 8,000 brownfields exist across the commonwealth. Properties may include abandoned schools, hospitals, gas stations and dry cleaners, former factories and mine-scarred lands.

"Kentucky has had great success with brownfield redevelopment through EPA grants over the past few years," said Amanda LeFevre, Director of the Division of Compliance Assistance, which oversees Kentucky's Brownfields Program. "These funds have been used to clean up and transform old theaters, former school buildings, abandoned industrial sites and more."

KY to expand, improve behavioral health treatment services

Section 223 of the Protecting Access to Medicare Act (PAMA) helps establish certified community behavioral health clinics (CCBHCs)

By Susan Dunlap

Frankfort, KY - The Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services (CHFS) today announced that Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has selected Kentucky to create, evaluate and certify community behavioral health clinics through a two-year demonstration program. The clinics will treat children and adults, primarily those with mental illness, emotional disturbances and/or substance use disorders.

"Opioid-related deaths in Kentucky were up 5% in 2019, and on top of that, in 2020, the pandemic has made it harder for Kentuckians struggling with addiction or other behavioral health challenges to get the assistance they need," said Governor Andy Beshear. "This project will help save and improve the lives of Kentuckians who receive expanded treatment services, and in doing so, it will positively impact their families as well."

Certified community behavioral health clinics (CCBHCs) will be funded as part of Medicaid and must meet all required criteria for staffing, availability and accessibility of services, care coordination, scope of services, quality and other reporting and organizational authority.

By Crystal Staley/Sebastian Kitchen

Frankfort, KY - Gov. Andy Beshear on Friday updated Kentuckians on the state's continuing efforts to fight the novel coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) in the commonwealth.

"We have stopped the exponential growth and escalation of this virus, but we still have to fight every day, wear masks and stay six feet apart so we can get this thing on the decline and open more things safely," said Gov. Beshear.

Case Information
As of 4 p.m. Aug. 21, Gov. Beshear said there were at least 42,265 coronavirus cases in Kentucky, 785 of which were newly reported Friday. Seventeen of the newly reported cases were from children ages 5 and younger.

"Ninety-seven of today's cases are kids under 18," said Gov. Beshear. "We've got to protect all of our children."

Unfortunately, Gov. Beshear reported eight new deaths Friday, raising the total to 864 Kentuckians lost to the virus.

The deaths reported Friday include a 49-year-old man from Clark County; a 92-year-old woman from Green County; a 92-year-old woman and a 71-year-old man from Jefferson County; a 78-year-old man from Lewis County; a 56-year-old man from Madison County; a 77-year-old woman from Montgomery County; and a 63-year-old woman from Taylor County.

Reilly Wells coordinated a clean-up project on Earth Day

By Sharon Dodson

2019 Rogers Scholar and Adair County High School student Reilly Wells planned and coordinated an Earth Day clean-up project. Due to COVID-19 health and safety requirements, she had to scale back the project to include a select group of family members and friends.

Wells had originally planned a larger school event to promote the importance of environmental protection and preservation to coincide with Earth Day on April 22.

"Even if this was a smaller project, I felt it mattered to our community," Wells said. "I have always been one to participate in environmental clean-up projects."

In observance of Earth Day, she recorded a Public Service Announcement (PSA) encouraging students in Adair County to help conserve and protect the environment.

Carol Perkins: Keeping cool in trying times

Previus Column: Visiting Wolf Creek and Tebb's Bend

By Carol Perkins

Being placed on hold agitates most of us, but what really annoys me is having to listen to the Covid-19 precautions the company is taking (I'm on the phone for goodness sakes) and then recorded voice telling me to listen closely because their menu has changed.

Has every business in the United States changed menus? I get the same spiel from everyone I call, whether a store or a doctor's office. "Listen carefully, our menu has recently changed." Was there a national menu changing day?

After I listen to all the options and still can't decide which fits my need, I enter "O" for the operator. That works only part of the time. One unfortunate result is that the menu descriptions start over, and I have to listen to all of the choices again. If none fits what I want, I try to find the closest to my problem. Then I'm transferred to another menu.

What I need is a human. After the new menu follows the old menu and I choose a number to press, once again I get a recording. When I finally reach a person, I am often transferred to another person in a different department. By then, my "nice voice" is fading.

Frankfort, KY - Gov. Andy Beshear announced Friday that the state's application to bring in additional federal money to aid unemployed Kentuckians has been accepted.

"COVID-19 has caused the loss of millions of jobs across the nation, and unfortunately Kentucky is no exception," the Governor said. "I am committed to fighting for every dollar to help our people survive this global pandemic and our workforce return to full strength."

The Governor said Kentucky is the first state in the Federal Emergency Management Agency's Region 4 to be approved through the agency's Lost Wages Program to give $400 to unemployment insurance claimants.

Melvin White's sidelong look at the cholera outbreak of 1873

By Jim

Melvin Lucien White, a native of the Tabor section of Adair County, left the most sacred hills on earth around 1882 and settled himself some 350 miles away in south-central North Carolina. Although far removed from Adair County in distance, he always it near, and his loquacious letters, liberally laced with humor, wry observations on the human condition, and recollections of people and events from his Kentucky days, frequently graced the pages of the Adair County News for some three decades, continuing until shortly before his death in 1932.

One such letter, penned from his home in Shelby, N.C., saw publication in the September 30, 1924 edition of The News. In it, he made mention of the 1873 cholera outbreak in Columbia and how Aunt Winnie from his section of the county viewed it (in his words) as
"a judgment sent on a wicked and perverse generation; and the severest penalties were in store for the stiff-necked scoffers of Columbia because all the people in towns were led by the vain pomp and glory of the world."
Melvin then proceeded to describe Columbia's "vain pomp and glory" at the time of the epidemic:

Adair EDA finalizes road plans, discusses jobs program

The Adair County Economic Development Authority (EDA) held its August Board of Directors Meeting August 18, 2020 with Chairman Bobby Morrison presiding, making the fourth member of the required quorum. In addition, those present were Roger Meadows, Mark Dykes, Columbia Mayor Pamela Hoots and Ann Martin.

Morrison announced that everything is finalized after the decision to change the direction of the road in the Green River Commerce Park and boring is ready to begin.

For months he has been working to gain access to the additional 144 acres of the Park, however, TC Energy refused all plans that would have meant crossing their pipeline.

With the Board's decision to avoid the pipeline and take the planned road to the back of the Industrial Park property, there will be no need to cross the pipeline. There are lots that can immediately be sold and developed, leaving the remaining 144 acres for a future time. They can build a good road to each of the lots in the upper part of the park with a completed road.

LCDHD COVID-19 Public Information Brief 08/20/2020

By Amy Tomlinson
Lake Cumberland District Health Department

For only the second time since the onset of the outbreak do we have to report 3 deaths. We lost a 63-year-old female nursing home resident in Taylor; a 93-year-old male nursing home resident in Casey; and a 92-year-old female nursing home resident from Green. This is certainly not how we like to see our hospitalized numbers decrease.

We have 20 COVID-19 related cases in the hospital right now ranging in age from 19 to 90 with an average age of 61. Five of our hospitalized patients are under the age of 50.

We added 55 new cases today, our highest one-day growth since the onset of the outbreak. Our number of active cases grew by forty.

Please help us slow the spread of COVID-19 by wearing your face covering, avoiding crowds (especially in confined spaces), social distancing when around others, increasing your hand hygiene, increasing your general sanitation, and by avoiding the touching of your face.

By Will Rich, ECC Youth Pastor

Egypt Christian Church will be providing internet access for students in Adair County who do not have access at home.

ECC's high speed internet will be available at several locations on the church grounds. Those locations include:
  • All parking spaces (spaces closer to the church have better speeds)
  • Covered Picnic Shelter for outdoor seating
  • Patio area in the back of the church for outdoor seating
The church will also be open to students on Monday-Thursday from 8amCT to NoonCT for indoor seating as well as restroom access. During this time, the church will have a volunteer with teaching experience available for tutoring and extra virtual learning assistance. Although we are assisting with school work, our tutoring services are not connected with the Adair or surrounding school systems. This is just an outreach program offered through our church.

We ask that parents/guardians of students who cannot drive stay on the premises while their children are in and around the building. Anyone entering the building will be required to wear a mask. Social distancing guidelines will be expected and encouraged.
