Governor's Saturday update: Masks seem to be working

By Crystal Staley/Sebastian Kitchen

Frankfort, KY - Gov. Andy Beshear on Saturday updated Kentuckians on the state's continuing efforts to fight the novel coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19).

As of 4 p.m. Aug. 1, Gov. Beshear said there were at least 30,723 coronavirus cases in Kentucky, 572 of which were newly reported Saturday. Eleven of the newly reported cases were from children age 3 and younger.

"Our positivity rate is again lower today than it was yesterday. Facial coverings work. They are our best chance of saving lives and protecting the health of our people, ensuring our economy can stay open, and getting our kids back in school," said Gov. Beshear.

Letter: What is Crop Scouting

Maury E Lewis writes:
What is crop scouting? How do they compete in it? --Maury
Maury, excellent question. We checked with Kirby Hancock for an expert answer, and Kirby says, "Basically, the contest simulates what an agronomist, county extension agent, or crop consultant would do in real life when making recommendations to farmers regarding plant growth and development, pests, weeds, nutrient disorders, etc."

Here is a video about the first competition for KY, last year in Princeton:

Letter: White Tomatoes at the Farmers Market

Bud writes:
So I've heard a lot about the white tomatoes being really good and really low in acid, which is always a plus for someone who loves them like I do. I finally went and got some today and wow they are as every bit delicious as everyone said. I wish I would have gotten the vendor's name, but anyway thank everyone of you because I know there isn't anything easy when it comes to a garden. It's work.

Kentucky Color: The Greatest Generation

By Billy Joe Fudge

Mom was born today, August 1st, 1931. She passed on April 25th. So thankful for her. She was definitely from the "Greatest Generation". Born into a subsistence farm family and growing up during the "Great Depression" and "World War II", she knew that poverty was only held at bay by hard work, but ultimately defeated by sharing with others.

Yes, I can still hear Mom and Dad during the quiet of night when they thought I was asleep, speaking softly to each other about how they were going to "keep the wolf from the door". Those conversations however, always ended with, "the Lord will make a way", which melted away every tinge of fear or apprehension I might have been feeling.

Like most every other child I am mostly a result of my upbringing and have a thousand stories to tell and here's one with a bit of advice from my Mom. I was 15 during the winter of '66/67. As a hard working, only child farm boy, I was about to go to work at my first public job at the Dairy Queen in February. Mom, I suppose, was sensing my apprehension and asked if I was nervous about going to work there. I answered "yes, to some degree."

I'll never forget her words of advice. "Billy Joe, you'll never have any problem at public work as long as you do your job and a little of someone else's." That advice has always served me well!

Another $15M available for need-based student aid programs

Frankfort, KY - A good year for the Kentucky Lottery means that the state's students will be eligible for $15 million more in need-based college financial aid programs from the Kentucky Higher Education Assistance Authority (KHEAA).

Governor Andy Beshear announced the increase during his July 22 statewide briefing.

"Due to higher lottery revenues, need-based student financial aid will receive another $15 million above what we expected for the year to come," Gov. Beshear said, encouraging Kentuckians to take advantage of a "historic amount" of aid.

Bridge repair to temporarily impact Lake Cumberland boat traffic

Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife

Frankfort, KY - A bridge maintenance project scheduled to start Monday, August 3, 2020, will temporarily affect boat traffic in the upper reaches of Lake Cumberland.

Norfolk Southern will be replacing approximately 1,100 railroad ties on the 1,200-foot bridge at Burnside. It expects to have the project completed no later than Thursday, Aug. 20.

From Monday through Thursday during the project timeframe, boat traffic under the bridge will be restricted to a 78-foot wide channel as a safeguard against any potential dangers from the work overhead.

The channel will be marked by buoys and other signage. Boaters should exercise caution as they approach the channel and pass slowly through the area. It will be a no-wake zone and idle speed only.
