Jenna Claywell in national Braille competition this month

By Jack A Follman

Jenna Claywell from Columbia, an Adair County Public School student who is visually impaired, has qualified as a finalist for the 2020 Braille Challenge Finals, a one-of-a-kind academic competition for students who are visually impaired in North America produced by Braille Institute.

She is one of the 50 finalists selected from all around the continent and will compete in the Finals competition this month.

The competition motivates students grades 1-12 to hone and practice their braille literacy skills.

Finalists are traditionally brought to Los Angeles to compete, but this year's competition will be held remotely in finalist's hometowns to accommodate social distancing and the closing ceremonies will be broadcast from LA, via live stream.

Letter: Virus is everywhere

Marie writes:
Do you honestly think picking a smaller store is going to make a difference if someone's been in there infected? And what happens when everyone decides to go to the smaller stores because no one's wearing a mask you're still in there with people not being protected from other people. And why should one have to sacrifice because the other doesn't want to sacrifice.

How would we have ever got through in this country if we weren't willing to make sacrifices. And how big of a sacrifice is it to put on a mask? Perhaps we should ask our servicemen and women what a true sacrifice is. I don't believe they would think it's wearing a mask. This is war people it may be invisible but it's war! --Marie

KDFW stresses boater safety this holiday

Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources

Conservation officers with the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources will join law enforcement agencies across the nation for Operation Dry Water during the July 4 holiday weekend.

Operation Dry Water is a national campaign designed to educate the public about the danger of boating while impaired. Kentucky will increase its law enforcement presence around the state's lakes and rivers from July 3-5 as a reminder not to boat under the influence.

Impaired boating is a leading contributor to recreational boating deaths.

"We've seen a surge in the number of boaters - and especially, inexperienced boaters - in the past few months. We're expecting heavy boater traffic during the holiday," said Col. Eric Gibson, director of law enforcement for Kentucky Fish and Wildlife. "We want to ensure that all boaters have a safe experience while they're enjoying Kentucky's waters."

Frankfort, KY - The Kentucky Department of Revenue (DOR) reminds taxpayers that the 2019 state income tax filing deadline is coming up on Wednesday, July 15, 2020.

Changes to driver's license, vehicle documentation renewals

Circuit court clerks to continue accepting driver's license renewal applications remotely through September 30, 2020, motor vehicle registration extension ends October 6, 2020.

By Naitore Djigbenou/Chuck Wolfe

Frankfort, KY - Gov. Andy Beshear on Thursday announced changes to a previously issued official order that temporarily granted a 90-day extension for select driver and motor vehicle documentation that expired while local and state government issuance offices were closed due to COVID-19. Provisions under official orders authorizing circuit court clerks to accept driver's license renewal applications remotely were also extended for an additional three months.

"This order clearly defines the end of the grace period for expired credentials and supports safe ways Kentuckians with looming expiration dates can maintain valid credentials and documentation that keep them on the move," said Gov. Beshear. "With the gradual reopening of government services, the original intentions of the 90-day extension have been fulfilled as more and more offices resume operations."
