Letter: Coffey Hole

Tommy Bailey writes:
Thanks Tammy for the post on Coffey Hole. You nailed it with just one word, "Respect."

I'm in that area about once a week and it breaks my heart to see all that pollution. The graffiti on the bridge by some misguided person is sad to see also. --Tommy

Letter: Golden Rule

Writer's name on file, withheld by request

I wondered the same thing with the mask and the lack of Adair Countians wearing any protection. Even looking at the pictures of the county officials shaking hands not wearing mask. This is absolutely a new normal, but one for the sake of our neighbors our family and our loved ones we must brace.

There's one wonderful thing about the United States of America is freedom. But with freedom comes a high standard. And I consider that the golden rule. Do on to to others as you would have done unto you. Remember that mask is not to protect you it's to protect the grandmother grandfather, uncle, the person that's taking chemotherapy at the time. Perhaps you walk by them innocently not knowing that you may be infected. We need more than prayers and thoughts at this point. We need science and sense.

Kentucky Color: Girdling Root

By Billy Joe Fudge

Girdling roots on the surface seem to be fairly innocuous in nature. How could this little root crossing over that big old root be of any danger to the big root and the tree itself?

Similarly, the same question could be asked about a rubber band placed around your wrist. However, we know that a rubber band restricts blood flow and if left on the wrist for too long will cause the hand to die and is therefore far from innocuous.

Therefore if we want our trees to be healthy, girdling roots should be removed as soon as they are discovered. Removing them early will help to minimize injury to the tree which will cause part of the trunk and crown to die and will substantially shorten the tree's life.
