KY AOT Program receives $4M grant

Funding will benefit 192 people with serious mental illnesses

By Susan Dunlap

Frankfort, KY - The Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services (CHFS) received a federal commitment of $4 million in grant funding that will enhance outpatient treatment services for people with serious mental illness (SMI).

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMSHA), the agency within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services that leads public health efforts to advance the behavioral health of the nation, awarded the grant to fund Kentucky Assisted Outpatient Treatment (AOT) programs in four regions of the state. AOT will serve a small SMI population in need of high-impact behavioral health services, such as people recently discharged from a psychiatric hospital who are not likely to engage voluntarily in ongoing care.

AOT is expected to serve 192 people and will be implemented in regions served by two state-owned psychiatric hospitals, Central State and Western State. This includes counties served by the Seven Counties, Communicare, River Valley and Pennyroyal Community Mental Health Centers (CMHCs). The grant will make $1 million available annually for four years.

Vote in person or mail ballot with today's postmark

By Linda Waggener

It’s a beautiful morning to be in downtown Columbia, Kentucky. The temperature is mild in warm sunshine and the aromas of burgers, french fries, and fajitas float by on a gentle breeze.

It’s 10:23amCT, Primary Election Day 2020, with over 1,000 mail-in votes already counted and in-person voting flowing smoothly at the Adair County Courthouse Annex.

Vote in person today or mail ballot with today's postmark. Mail in votes postmarked today will continue to be counted until June 27, 2020.

There is plenty of parking. Election officers and staff have moved out of their parking spaces to make room for voters to enter through the back door of the Courthouse Annex if it’s more convenient. That means there’s parking for voters in the front, back and to the side.

Election workers and Deputies are stationed at each entrance to help with directions. For those with disabilities, drivers can pull up to the Greensburg Street doors for assistance and a totally step-free path to voting.

The Primary Election vote will be officially certified June 30, 2020.

Recycling III: If not here, where to take it?

There are other regional drop-off locations for items like glass and styrofoam, that are not accepted by the Adair County Recycling Center. It is important to recycle long-lasting materials like glass, styrofoam, and plastics, because they take hundreds of years to decompose...

By Rebecca Montgomery

For a dedicated recycler, items that are not accepted at the Adair County Recycling Center can be taken to other regional recycling facilities instead.

Pulaski County accepts glass drop-off at their facility located at 218 KY-80 BUS in Somerset, and Glasgow's landfill at 400 Glen Garry Rd has a recycling center where recyclables, including glass, can be dropped off for free. Clean styrofoam from food packages, egg cartons, and packing peanuts can be taken to a foam drop-off in Horse Cave, at 975 South Dixie Highway (this drop-off is temporarily closed due to the pandemic).

Governor: New guidance for venues next week

Frankfort, KY - Gov. Beshear and Dr. Steven Stack, Kentucky's commissioner of public health, spoke on Monday about updated guidance beginning next week for many venues, including restaurants and bars. The new guidance also covers wedding venues and gatherings of 50 or fewer people.

"Next Monday, just about everything in the commonwealth will be open, from bars, wedding venues, public pools and even Kentucky Kingdom," the Governor said. "It has been a long road dealing with this virus. But by following medical guidelines we have gone from a time when our cases were doubling every week, to a point where we are safely beginning to reopen businesses and our economy."

Beginning June 29, people can begin gathering in groups of 50 or fewer people. Adherence to rules on social distancing, mask use and sanitation remains critically important, and people in more vulnerable categories should continue to avoid such gatherings.

Reminder: Email, phone, and text are not KY voting methods

By Elizabeth Kuhn

Frankfort, KY - Attorney General Daniel Cameron together with Secretary of State Michael Adams alerted Kentuckians to a new election-related scam encouraging voters to cast their votes in the primary election by email, phone, or text, which are not legal voting methods in Kentucky. Voters may receive a call from a scammer asking them to vote using one of these fraudulent methods. In some cases, the scammers may require a voter to provide his or her personal or financial information in order to cast a vote.

Attorney General Cameron reported that his office's Election Fraud Hotline has received complaints from Kentucky voters about this type of voting scam, and the office is currently investigating the complaints.

"It's important for Kentuckians to be on guard against voting scams during the primary season and never provide your personal or financial information to an unknown source," said Attorney General Cameron. "We encourage anyone who encounters a potential voting scam to report it immediately to our Election Fraud Hotline at 1-800-328-VOTE."
