Governor's Friday update

By Crystal Staley/Sebastian Kitchen

Frankfort, KY - Gov. Andy Beshear on Friday updated Kentuckians on the state's efforts to combat the novel coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19).

"I'm so proud of Team Kentucky," said Gov. Beshear. "As we realize that this fight will be a marathon, not a sprint, we have not lost heart. We have not lost our determination to protect each other. Instead, we have steeled ourselves to live in this new normal until we get a vaccine."

Yesterday, the governor signed a proclamation recognizing today, June 19, as Juneteenth National Freedom Day. He will encourage the legislature to adopt it as a state holiday in the next regular session.

"In recent months, we've faced troubling reminders that justice is not always blind," said Gov. Beshear. "We've also seen the Black and African-American community suffer disproportionately from COVID-19. We have so much more to do to ensure that all men and women are treated equally, but today we can also commemorate how far we've come."

KY receives $7.4M in Federal AmeriCorps service grants

By Susan Dunlap

Frankfort, KY - The Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services (CHFS) acknowledged today proof of commitment to Kentucky communities from AmeriCorps, a national service program administered by Serve Kentucky, a CHFS agency. Twenty-two AmeriCorps-funded grants will provide more than $7.4 million in federal funding in Kentucky.

Gov. Andy Beshear said, "Through the support of AmeriCorps, Kentucky's commitment to service will be significantly boosted. Even in these times of uncertainty - especially in these times of uncertainty - we remain steadfast in our mission to provide community service, and this commitment from AmeriCorps will help us continue to make positive impact in our communities."

AmeriCorps funding helps provide services to aging Kentuckians, disaster relief, K-12 tutoring, and food services. Funding is provided by the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS), the federal agency for volunteering, civic engagement, and national service programs, including AmeriCorps.

Remembering Mrs. Margie Burris Coffey

By Mike Watson

Mrs. Coffey was a dear soul, a loving, caring teacher and friend to the multitudes. The world will be more lonely in her absence for those who knew and loved her. Those touched by her compassion will never be quite the same. Having known her for more than fifty years, she was much like a favorite aunt, always sharing words of encouragement when they were most needed, though she didn't know that.

A tiny lady, she would face any obstacle, knowing that her faith and grit would carry her through whatever lay before her. Her kindness was without end, illustrated in her affection for the many children she taught and loved over the decades as a teacher, and mentor.

Carol Perkins: In need of rescue

Previous Column: Adventures of an accidental Santa

By Carol Perkins

With my friend's permission, I will tell her story, which could happen to any of us who are not as strong as we once were.

Having a few problems, which I won't discuss, she asked her doctor for advice. He suggested that she sit in a bathtub of warm water and relax. At one in the morning and unable to sleep, she ran warm water into the bathtub and did as he suggested. When that water turned chilly, she drained it and filled the tub again. By the second round, she thought she might be able to sleep, so she drained the water and started to get out. A nice soft towel awaited her.

At first, she tried to stand as a person ordinarily would, but her legs were too weak to raise her. Then she put both hands on the side of the tub and tried to pull herself up, but she couldn't do that, either. She said she tried every way possible to get out of that tub, but nothing worked. At two in the morning, she was stuck.

Census response just over 60 percent, more needed

Remember, our response rate dictates the amount of funding we will qualify for in future roads, healthcare and more. Please send in your household count now.

Census workers have finished delivering 2020 Census invitations and paper questionnaires to households areas across the country. Nearly every household nationwide has received an invitation to participate in the 2020 Census, either in the mail or dropped off by a census worker.

As of June 18, 61.5% of households have responded to the census. The U.S. Census Bureau urges households to respond now by completing and mailing back the paper questionnaire, or responding online at 2020census.gov, or by phone at 844-330-2020 using the provided Census ID.

Tribute to Aunt Margie

TRIBUTE TO AUNT MARGIE BURRIS COFFEY
By Phillip Coffey

Slowly stride along the narrow path.
Gathering flowers, seeking Jordon's shore.
Smiling children with arms out-stretched
Seeking refuge from life's storms....

Sheltered masses meeting at Heaven's Gate.
Angels gather to meet her loving soul..
All the wiser, she taught us well.
To seek the Kingdom this we must.
