September 29, 1977 Around Adair with Ed Waggener

The article below first appeared in the September 29, 1977 issue of the Daily Statesman. Topics included the Adair County traffic survey, George Keltner's move to town, The Pete Walker philosophy of driving, and channelling Jacques Pepin in Adair County creeks. --Pen

The new 50-unit housing addition being built by Columbia Partners behind the Municipal Housing project on Carrie Bolin Drive is taking a shape. The architecture is interesting, adding a little excitement to the skyline.

There is more traffic
A complete traffic survey is underway for Adair County. Part of it is complete. It should come as no surprise that the whole world passes Jamestown Street between Reed Street and Guthrie Street each day. In the past four years, the traffic count there has gone from 7,459 cars daily to 9,123 a day.

But the most dramatic increase in the traffic flow has come in the area North of the intersection of Tutt Street and Jamestown Street in the area of Food Check. There traffic was 4,135 cars per day in 1973, but the most recent survey shows that 6,933 pass there daily!

Still very high in the traffic count business is the section just north of the intersection of Highway 80 and Jamestown Street, around G&G Motors. The traffic count there has jumped almost 1,000 cars a day, to 8,649.

COVID-19 virus came home last week - my home

By David Goguen

Wake up, America. Wake up!

The COVID-19 virus came home last week. My home, to be exact. As it turns out, my mother tested positive in the care facility where she now dwells. My brother delivered the news via smartphone, and there was a solemn silence in the moments after he finished telling me that she had been moved to an isolation area.

Silence is a good thing when facing such news. It provides a pregnant canvas for emotions to surface and fertile soil to plant the seeds of prayer. It brings clarity to one's priorities and, more importantly, it provides a space for memories to emerge.

For those of you who have sought to politicize COVID-19 on the right or left, know this.

Quarles, Cameron urge investigation into Cattle Price Fixing

By Sean Southard

Frankfort, KY - Agriculture Commissioner Dr. Ryan Quarles and Attorney General Daniel Cameron sent a joint letter today to U.S. Attorney General William Barr asking the Department of Justice (DOJ) to investigate possible anticompetitive practices in the beef packing sector.

The letter notes that, despite steady consumer demand for beef, the prices paid to Kentucky's cattle producers have declined, suggesting the presence of possible market manipulation and other anticompetitive practices. As a result, Kentucky consumers are paying more for beef while hardworking Kentucky farmers are making less.

Kentucky Color: Poplar Grove

By Billy Joe Fudge

This grove of Poplars (our official state tree) near Sano Road is quite majestic. It set me to thinking about all the Poplar Grove churches, cemeteries, schools and communities I've encountered over the years. Although I'm not prepared to rattle off many of them, I just know there have been several.

There are many other species of trees that tend to gather together in groups. Many of these have also inspired similar names over the years, such as, Beech Grove, Cedar Grove, Chestnut Grove, Oak Grove, et al. This phenomenon, I believe, is indicative of the close relationship our ancestors had with trees, the forest and nature as a whole.

Additionally, I have extensive experience over the last 48 years in taking folks, both young and old, on excursions in the woods. In that nearly half century, I've yet to have had a single person with a negative experience. A great majority of the individuals and or each group have articulated an intense feeling of peace and calm, while many have expressed a higher sense of spirituality while losing themselves in the experience.

The Great Wooded South is waiting for you. A walk in the woods might be just what the Doctor ordered!
