April Showers: Ignore the cat, but not the peacock

You can be fairly sure that April showers will bring May flowers, but is there any way to tell when the showers are going to come? Probably not but there are a lot of superstitions that try to predict them. Here are some:

* A cat washing herself while looking out the window, forecasts rain.
This is supposed to be a favorite saying in the state of Maine. But sources say it is false. Seems Maine cats -- and really all cats -- are always looking out the window and grooming themselves. Sadly, it doesn't always rain.

COVID-19 precautions affect coursework for spring classes at CU

By Matthew Taylor

Campbellsville, KY - For many professors at Campbellsville University, the sudden change to online affected the coursework they had planned for their spring classes.

Since March 16, all in-person classes were switched to online to abide to the COVID-19 precautions. Originally, classes were going to resume as normal on March 27, but Campbellsville University's leadership team decided, for the safety of the students, faculty, staff and coaches, to keep all classes on online.

"As I used to say in the Army, 'the flash to bang time is very short,' and it was four days from when the university made the decision to suspend classes for two weeks to when they made the decision to make the entire semester online," Col. William Ritter, assistant professor of public relations, said.

"Normally, I have several weeks or a month or more to develop and upload coursework for an online class. I found it challenging because it's a lot easier to walk in and teach your class based on your notes than it is to try and remember everything you're going to tell your students so you can record it either audio-wise or video-wise."

Letter: Meaning of presumptive positive

Billy Joe Fudge writes:
My Mother is a resident at Summit Manor so this COVID-19 event is serious to me and I usually ask questions when I do not understand something.
  • (A) What qualifies as a "Presumptive Positive" case and
  • (B) What criteria leads you to "believe COVID-19 to be widespread", "regardless of the confirmed case count for any Lake Cumberland County"?
Billy Joe, thanks for writing, and sorry that your mother has to be in the middle of a difficult situation.

According to the CDC, a "presumptive positive" is "A presumptive positive result is when a patient has tested positive by a public health laboratory, but results are pending confirmation at CDC. For public health purposes, a presumptive positive result using the CDC test is treated as a positive."

We're waiting on word from the Health Department for official reasoning on the assumption that it's already "widespread."

LWC/CU projected to receive nearly $6M in CARES funds

By Sue Patrick

The Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education (CPE) is projecting that the federal CARES Act will provide at least $156 million in relief funds this year to Kentucky colleges and universities, including $78 million to help students with expenses related to disruptions to their education during the COVID-19 outbreak.

Locally, the amount projected for Lindsey Wilson College is $2,587,859, and Campbellsville University is projected to receive $3,201,468.

Officials from the CPE finalized the analysis last week following guidance from the U.S. Department of Education. The totals include all of the state's public universities, the Kentucky Community and Technical College System and private institutions within the commonwealth.

SCOKY: In-person court services suspended through May 31, 2020

By Leigh Anne Hiatt

KFB donates $500K to hunger relief charities

By Sean Southard

Louisville, KY -- In response to rising food insecurity during the COVID-19 pandemic, Kentucky Farm Bureau (KFB) Mutual Insurance Company and the Kentucky Farm Bureau Insurance Foundation will donate a total of $500,000 to hunger relief charities as part of Agriculture Commissioner Dr. Ryan Quarles' Kentucky Hunger Initiative. The donation is the largest single private donation made as part of the Kentucky Hunger Initiative since Commissioner Quarles launched the effort in 2016.

"When we started the Kentucky Hunger Initiative, I knew the ag community would step up to fight hunger like we never had before, but I could not have imagined a half-million-dollar donation from Kentucky Farm Bureau Insurance," Commissioner Quarles said. "This donation, in this time, demonstrates how Kentucky agriculture is not only committed to growing food and fiber during a pandemic, but also to marshaling funds to feed vulnerable Kentuckians affected by it. I cannot thank Kentucky Farm Bureau Insurance enough, and I look forward to thanking them in person once our time of social distancing has passed."

Mid-April 1945: Of wars, and auctions, and death in far-off lands

By JIM

In mid April, 1945, America mourned the death of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. An ocean away, the Soviet Army had Berlin partially surrounded and began a merciless artillery pounding of the city; and the bloodbath in the South Pacific continued. Not yet known stateside, two more Adair Countians suffered battlefield deaths: 20-year-old TSgt Ivan Haskel Robinson in Europe on the 15th, and 26-year-old Pfc Wilbur M. "Budge" Edrington in the Battle of Luzon on the 16th.

Budge had written to his mother in early April, and The News made mention of the letter in the "Our Boys in the Service" column in the April 18 edition:

Governor hails $1M gift to Team Kentucky Fund, PPE donations

By Crystal Staley/Sebastian Kitchen

Frankfort, KY - Gov. Andy Beshear on Tuesday highlighted the hard work, donations and good deeds of Kentuckians in the fight against the novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).

The Governor announced that the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels is making the largest gift in the storied organization's history: $1 million to the Team Kentucky Fund.

"Thank you to the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels for once again stepping up and assisting fellow Kentuckians when they need it the most," Gov. Beshear said. I have said repeatedly we will get through this together and the Kentucky Colonels are making that journey easier for some struggling Kentuckians."

He urged others to follow the Kentucky Colonels' lead and donate to the Team Kentucky Fund.
