Non-Traditional Instruction resumes April 13, 2020

By Phyllis Curry

Adair County students will return to non-traditional instruction Monday, April 13 and continue through Friday, May 1, or until Governor Beshear and Commissioner of Education Kevin Brown make a decision on the remainder of the 2019-20 school year.

The first phase of NTI was for 14 days. The district was able to collect 94% of the completed student packets for those 14 days, ensuring those days will count as instructional days and will not have to be made up at the end of the year.

The second phase will look a bit different, but will still require students to complete all assignments in either a digital or paper format. All Adair County Primary Center students will have a paper packet. Those packets may be picked up Monday, April 13, 2020 at the school between 9amCT and 3pmCT.

All students in the district will receive work for core subjects (reading/English, math, science, social studies) on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday and all other related subjects on Tuesday and Thursday.

Students at ACES, ACMS and ACHS have the choice of doing online classes or paper packets. All online classes will be available at 9amCT Monday morning. School websites will have instructions on how to access the digital content. Paper packets may be picked up at all schools from 9amCT to 3pmCT on Monday, April 13. Students do not need to complete both. The choice depends on personal preference and available technology.

The biggest difference in the 15 days of NTI from April 13-May 1 is that work must now be documented daily by teachers and weekly reports made that show completion rates.

Letter: Pen's photos and Linda's stories

Mary Knight writes:
Linda--When I turn on my computer, I go to News from Columbia first. And you NEVER disappoint. Pen's food shots are always appreciated, but his family shots take the cake. Hailey in the tree, and her dog waiting, is a winner anywhere.

Your answer to the Farmers' Market note was so good--and your photos of Columbia are wonderful. What would we do without you and your talent and thoughtfulness??? and your captions????? Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! --Dick and Mary Knight

P.S. How did that angelic looking dog get a name like Moose?
Comments re: Waiting Patiently

Mary, thank YOU!! It's just awesome when we can share and connect and know when it happens - your letter is deeply appreciated.

As to the name for Moose, that innocent looking puppy, I will yield to Pen and Amy and Graham and Evan and Hailey to say exactly why they chose it for him. My thoughts would be that it may be because he is like a moose in a china shop - he can 'innocently' wreak havoc within the confines of their home just by being his puppy self.

I agree with Ms. Forsee's comment about the farmer's market. Can't they sell their produce to the local merchants?

April 12th Easter

By JIM

In the past sixscore years (1900 - 2020), Easter Sunday has fallen on April 12th five times, more often than on any other date. Curiously, however, four of the five instances were 1936 and earlier; the only time since was 1998. Easter won't fall on April 12 again until 2150.

Seeing Roscoe and Rory reminds neighbor of good times

Stephen Keen posted a photo of their at-home church celebrations with his mother Montra - the picture reminded us how much we appreciate her and prompted good memories.

Fellow retired Adair Public School teacher Ellen Zornes said, "Montra and I were neighbors and friends for several years before we downsized and moved back to town.

"Seeing Roscoe and Rory (on the chair) reminded me of such good times.

The world's largest traffic jam?
Thursday, May 4, 1978, may have seen the world's largest traffic jam. For sure, it was the largest crowd seen in Columbia, ever, by those with whom I talked. The jam was alleviated some time late in the day when the police started directing traffic. I thought at first that the jam was caused by visitors to Columbia for Founder's Day at Lindsey Wilson. That did contribute to the congestion, but it later occurred to me that it was check day at the banks. Most of the government checks arrive around the third day of each month. Wednesday, May 3, the banks were closed, which meant that the people receiving government checks had to wait until Thursday. The traffic wasn't all bad. Elaine Bennett, proprietor of a downtown restaurant, reported that Thursday was a record day for her business.

The Woozle speaks
Editorializing on the "Wagner boards" at local restaurants has become a high art. I have heard individuals threatened by telling them that they would be the target of the next Wagner board message. Moreover, everybody is trying to get into the act. At the Burger Queen, Kenny Dyer, known as "The Woozle," has suggested this message: Death is still the number one killer.

This week the Burger Queen Wagner board offered this message, "We honor National Woozle Week."

I have since learned that there are more than one woozle. And that there is more than one Woozle.
