Letter: We ride our motorbikes on that road

Diane Hammonds commented:

We know this road in the picture because we ride our motorcycles that way often.

We've lived in Adair County for ten years and know it well - located in the valley before you get to Burkesville on Hwy 61. - Diane

Letter: Video from meetings

Terry Davis writes:
Can the video from the fiscal court meeting be shown on Columbia Magazines website please, there some in our community that are not Facebook fans and would like to see this video as well. Thanks --T Davis
Terry, thanks for writing. We understand and sympathize. Unfortunately, when we tried embedding Facebook video feeds so that you could watch the video directly on Columbia Magazine, it worked on some browsers and not on others. We do prefer YouTube or Vimeo, which are much easier for our readers to view, easier to schedule, and tend to work across more devices and platforms.

However, county officials have had to orchestrate several technologies in a hurry to make online meetings possible, and they've had to go with options that work with what they already have available and are comfortable operating.

We're impressed that so many meetings have been live streamed already, with everyone able to virtually participate. We've checked to confirm that you can view the Fiscal Court proceedings on the Facebook site without needing to log in or create an account.

Letter: Farmer's Market

Sheila Forsee writes:
I'm curious as to why in times when churches are not even having in person services due to the high number of corona virus victims the farmer's market is still going on. --Sheila
Sheila, thanks for writing. We are finding lots of ways that worship can continue without face-to-face contact, including television, radio, and online.

The Farmer's Market is deemed an essential business, like grocery stores are, because food is necessary for survival, and there's simply no way to distribute it without contact of some sort.

In addition, the supply chain for the Farmer's Market is typically much, much shorter than for traditional grocery stores, thus reducing the overall amount of face-to-face contact that has to happen on the journey between the producer and the consumer.

AG statement on drive-in church services

By Elizabeth Kuhn

Frankfort, KY - Attorney General Daniel Cameron on Friday released the following statement regarding the prohibition of drive-in church services during the COVID-19 pandemic:
"We are aware that some Kentucky jurisdictions are discussing a prohibition of drive-in church services for the upcoming Easter holiday. As long as religious groups and worshippers are complying with current Centers for Disease Control ("CDC") recommendations for social distancing to slow the spread of COVID-19, we see no problem with these drive-in services occurring.

Religious organizations should not be treated any differently than other entities that are simultaneously conducting drive-through operations, while also abiding by social distancing policies. As long as Kentuckians are permitted to drive through liquor stores, restaurants, and other businesses during the COVID-19 pandemic, the law requires that they must also be allowed to participate in drive-in church services, consistent with existing policies to stop the spread of COVID-19.

We must all continue to work together and do our part to fight back against COVID-19. However, individuals who wish to celebrate religious holidays using a format that follows social distancing policies and CDC guidelines should not be unnecessarily banned from doing so."

KTC extends Emergency Order for commercial drivers to June 1

By Chuck Wolfe

Frankfort, KY - Kentucky Transportation Secretary Jim Gray today extended until June 1, 2020 an existing emergency order that temporarily lifts regulatory restrictions on motor carriers delivering goods and services critical to COVID-19 pandemic relief.

The order is in keeping with Gov. Andy Beshear's declaration of an emergency as part of a sweeping effort to protect Kentuckians and combat the spread of the novel coronavirus, known as COVID-19. Secretary Gray's original order, issued on March 13, would have expired at midnight Sunday.

Gov. Beshear asks for best efforts in COVID-19 fight

Amid Passover and Easter celebrations, Governor urges compliance as cases continue to grow.

By Crystal Staley/Sebastian Kitchen

Frankfort, KY - Gov. Andy Beshear on Friday urged Kentuckians of all faiths to stay strong in the fight against the novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) as cases continue to grow.

"This is a time and weekend, a whole week for multiple faiths, that is about faith. It's about knowing we have faced as people - as Christians, as Jews, as members of many faiths - many difficult, dark times, and we have prevailed," the Governor said. "We know that the weeks or the months ahead will be difficult. We know that there are going to be tougher days before there are easier days. But we also know because we have faith that we are going to get through this and we are going to get through it together. We are going to pass this test of humanity."

While getting compliance and support from a vast majority of leaders and Kentuckians in the faith community, Gov. Beshear is warning anyone planning to attend an in-person mass gathering this weekend that they will face quarantine orders.

"This is the only way we can ensure that your decision doesn't kill someone else," the Governor said. Gov. Beshear has noted that an outbreak in Hopkins County that sickened dozens and led to multiple deaths was traced to a church revival there in mid-March.

He said officials are aware of only about six churches in the commonwealth that are still planning to hold in-person services.
