Lawmakers push for Insulin Bill

By Crystal Staley/Sebastian Kitchen

Frankfort, KY - To assist more than half a million Kentuckians with diabetes including some who ration insulin because of the excessive cost, Gov. Andy Beshear and a bipartisan group of legislators gathered at the Capitol on Tuesday to urge lawmakers to pass a bill that would drive down the price.

The price of insulin has tripled over the last decade without any significant change to the product. While companies pay $2 to $7 to manufacture a single vial, Kentuckians hit hardest may be forced to pay more than $1,000 a month for their lifesaving supply.

Metcalfe eligible for up to $50k in flood cleanup grants

Gov. Beshear Announces $500,000 in Grants Available for Qualifying Counties for Debris Disposal after Flooding. PRIDE funds will go toward environmentally responsible disposal

By Crystal Staley/Sebastian Kitchen

Frankfort, KY - Gov. Andy Beshear and Energy and Environment Cabinet (EEC) Secretary Rebecca Goodman announced that a total of $500,000 in grant funding is available to qualifying counties for flood debris cleanup.

Grants will be made available for the 12 counties that have received a state of emergency declaration from the governor: Bell, Clay, Harlan, Hickman, Knox, Lawrence, Leslie, Letcher, McCreary, Metcalfe, Perry and Whitley. Counties will be eligible for up to $50,000 each to cover the cost of collecting, transporting and disposing of municipal solid waste resulting from the flood event.

Gov. Beshear, who declared a state of emergency Feb. 7 and deployed state resources as he visited areas hardest hit by recent rains, said, "I am pleased to make this money available and stand with communities as they recover from recent flooding. I encourage everyone doing cleanup to be safe and to help the environment by properly disposing of all debris."

Kentuckians impacted by recent flooding are urged to be safe and environmentally conscious when cleaning and disposing of material. Potential hazards include asbestos, mold and toxic chemicals.

Black vultures watch when cow is close to calving

By Victoria Pike of Miss Vicky's Pampered Angus Ranch

Thanks for the post on the vultures gathering. They were at the Hunter Place Farm this morning bothering the cows.

Seems they were eating from the manure piles any undigested corn. The girls weren’t happy about them being on their territory and I ran them off.

Farmers need to start keeping an eye on their livestock with calving season here. The vultures know when a cow is close to calving and will sit on fence posts and watch her until she gets down to have the calf.

At her most vulnerable moment they will attack both cow and newborn calf. Sometimes before calf is fully out.

Memories of attending Yellowhammer School

By Dave Rosenbaum

I took my first five years of school at Yellowhammer. The building had no electricity and we carried water from a spring on an adjoining farm. Learned which dead trees were most likely to have flying squirrels, how to find ginseng and blood root and where to harvest the best rabbit tobacco.

In the cold winter, the benches would be moved to circle the stove and sometimes a thin sheet of ice would freeze in the water bucket at the rear of the room.

The boys' outhouse was across the road in front of the school and the girls' facility was behind the school. The boys' structure wasn't nearly the quality construction of the girls' facility. The boys concluded that if they pushed their outhouse over, the board of Education would be compelled to come and build one commensurate with the girls' facility. The outhouse was pushed over but nobody ever showed up to build a new one.
