Letter: Memories of Silver Comments re article 108267 ACES Attendance and essays win bicycles By BJ Hagy The price for going to school has gone up since my days in grade school at Knifley Grade Center. "Casey Creek Lodge #536 F.& A.M. presented bicycles..." for attendance for only part of the year, and for essays. Teachers used to give out a Silver Dollar if a student make it through a complete school year without missing a day. It was almost inevitable that many of us would miss at least one day, due to being sick or for some family emergency that would keep us home. I personally wasn't successful until I reached the 8th Grade. Mr. John Dunbar was the 8th Grade teacher when I was there. I didn't much care for Mr. Dunbar so I was determined that he was going to have to pay me a Silver Dollar that year. It was the only school year I made it without missing a day. I earned my dollar. Thanks to the Casey Creek Masonic Lodge our teachers don't have to give up their Silver like they used to. --BJ 2020-01-06 11:53:58 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Letters and Reader Feedback

High water on Green River Lake A maintenance project at the tailwater area of Green River Lake dam prevented the usual water release in December, and Green River Lake is currently over 31 feet above winter pool. This week, the Corps has been working to release water as we enter a statistically wetter period of the year. On January 4, 2020 the Green River Lake - US Army Corps of Engineers, Louisville District facebook page announced that they "will be opening up to 18 tenths on the main gates with an outflow of around 6,800 cfs by days end." The Tailwater Recreation Area remains closed to the public at this time. Due to flooding conditions, Site 1 boat ramp, Smith Ridge boat ramp, and Wilson Creek Recreation Area remain closed at this time. Larry J. Smith, General Manager, The Big Dawg, FM 99.9 radio, got out to the lake yesterday to collect some photos. Click headline for album. 2020-01-06 05:56:06 | Comments | Printable version
