History: Background of historic Hurt-Foust property

By Mike Watson

The City of Columbia is embarking on a major adventure with the purchase of an historic property, commonly called the Hurt-Foust Home.

The property in question had been in the Hurt family since the late 1800s. This stately, antebellum structure was erected about 1854 or 1855 by Thomas H. Frazer when he was quite a young man. Within two years he sold the property, likely making a handsome profit, to Timoleon Cravens, a well-known attorney and a motivating figure in local, state, and eventually national Democrat political circles.

J.O.Y. Ministries receives freezer to facilitate Food Program

By Terry Partin

Christmas is a season when we pause in recognition of our Savior's birth, and is also known as a time for giving. Locally, The Appliance Store and Family First Health Care of Columbia have partnered to assist J.O.Y. Ministries in its efforts to serve the people of our Community.

A common problem for Food Pantries in sufficient cold storage. Dr. Partin of Family First Health Care and William Johnson of The Appliance Store recognized that need and the exemplary work being done by J.O.Y. Ministries to contribute to the dietary needs of our Community and partnered to donate a large chest type freezer to facilitate the food program for the Ministry.

J.O.Y. Ministries along with The Adair Food Pantry are partners with Ky Hunter's For The Hungry, a program which pays the processing fees for deer donated by hunters to feed the hungry throughout the Commonwealth. Locally hunters have already donated over 1500 pounds of processed nutritious burger to supplement meals.

Hunters may donate a legally harvested deer to Fairplay Meat Processing, Sano Meat Processing and Showalter's Custom Meats.

New look coming for Kentucky license plates

By Naitore Djigbenou

Frankfort, KY - The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) is making major progress to introduce a modernized license plate manufacturing process in late 2020 after entering into a recent agreement with Intellectual Technologies Inc. Unlike current license plates embossed with raised letters and numbers, the new plates will be flat and printed digitally, reducing the production costs of bulk manufacturing, storage space, and unused inventory. The background graphics and pricing for standard and special license plates will remain the same.

Newer plates will gradually replace older license plates that have lost their reflectivity, making them easier to read by humans and electronic tolling devices. Motorists will continue to visit their local county clerk office to register their vehicle and leave the office with a new standard license plate featuring a new alphanumeric combination.

Letter: Restoration of house is top priority

Brody Blair writes:
I think that the restoration of the house should be the top on our priority list, then growing the forest back, and adding a trail. I also think an amphitheater is a nice idea, and would add to the unique essence of Columbia's Downtown scene. Which is quickly, and to the liking of many, being restored with locally owned businesses.

The Hurt Property is an important puzzle piece to our community achieving its many goals. How we design this public property, determines much for our city. --Brody
