Letter: Joe Spires, excellent driver and true gentleman

Frank Dickerson writes:
Thanks for the photo of Joe Spires, who was our bus driver to and from the old Knifley High school for "X" number of years. An excellent driver and a true gentleman to boot. That was back in the days of almost no snow days. Even with snow he would take Dunbar hill as if it were a mole hill. Wishing him many more years of health and happiness. --Frank

Carol Perkins: May I help you?

Previous column: Class reunion time By Carol Perkins

The pinch-faced secretary could not make eye contact. I stood in front of her, waiting for her to notice me, but I was invisible. I thought about tapping her desk, but she was in no mood and I didn't want to risk getting something started. It was too pretty outside for me to get my insides dark and ugly, so I waited.

"May I help you," she said the way a robot might respond. I handed her an order from the doctor, and she immediately dialed the lab to make an appointment. (I assume that is what she was doing.) Holding the phone with her shoulder, she said, "Any day you can't go?" I told her, and she repeated to the person on the other end of the line. She hung up and turned to finish highlighting. "Go to this location on Monday for .....and she named off the name of a sinus test that I knew my mother had already had.

"Would you look in her records and see if she hasn't already had this test."

September is Deaf Awareness Month

KCDHH encourages Kentuckians to learn the signs of hearing loss

By Kim Saylor Brannock

Frankfort, KY - An estimated 700,000 Kentuckians are deaf or hard of hearing, according to U.S. Census data. As a part of Deaf Awareness, the Kentucky Commission on the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (KCDHH) within the Education and Workforce Development Cabinet (EWDC) is encouraging Kentuckians to learn the signs of hearing loss.

There are over 48 million Americans who have significant hearing loss, according to the 2011 National Health Interview Survey. By 2030, the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders estimates that number to be 90 million.

Hearing loss is one of the most common conditions affecting older adults and may be hard to detect because it usually happens over time. Approximately one in three adults between the ages of 65 and 74 has hearing loss, according to the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders.
