Bevin administration can reject Beshear's legal contracts By John Cheves, Lexington Herald-Leader The Kentucky Supreme Court ruled Thursday that Democratic Attorney General Andy Beshear cannot hire private lawyers to assist his office in suing the pharmaceutical industry over the opioid addiction epidemic because that contract was rejected by Republican Gov. Matt Bevin's administration and the GOP-led General Assembly. The decision comes even as some states, like Oklahoma, are racking up record-sized wins against the pharmaceutical industry in court. Other states, including Ohio, are poised to move forward with their addiction-related claims against the industry. Read more at kentucky.com 2019-08-29 22:19:04 | Comments | Printable version

Carol Perkins: Hearing things Previous column: Class reunion time By Carol Perkins I promise I'm not making this up. I was sitting in my computer room when heard the door open from the garage, which is at the other end of the house. I heard rustling as if someone were coming through the door, so assuming it was Guy, I yelled, "Come on in; I'm back here." No response. I thought that he must have gone back to the car for something, so I waited and continued what I was doing. In a short while, long enough for him to come back inside, I decided to investigate. We don't have people opening the door and coming inside on a regular basis. As I walked down the hallway, I knew that if the light were on in his office, he was home. No light. I went to the door; no sign of a car. I paused, deciding that my mind was playing tricks on me. However, this was a big trick. I know I heard something! Another afternoon I was relaxed in my bedroom for an afternoon nap when I heard Guy's voice. AGs urge DeVos to provide data on PSLF To date, only 1% of Public Service Loan Forgiveness applications have been approved By Crystal Staley/Kenneth Mansfield Frankfort, KY - Attorney General Andy Beshear and a coalition of attorneys general this week sent a letter to U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos urging once again that the U.S. Department of Education (DOE) provide data to help states address ongoing problems with the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program. In the letter, the coalition reiterated that DOE data would help states address the ongoing problems with PSLF, but the publicly available data DeVos has provided to states so far goes only a short way toward a full accounting of the current situation for borrowers relying on PSLF. The data provided by DOE indicates that only 864 of 76,002 applications for PSLF have been approved and only 442 of 12,429 applications to the Temporary Expanded PSLF program have been approved. The data shows that tens of thousands of borrowers have been denied. Therefore, the coalition has requested better data from DOE in order to examine the scope and source of the problems to assist these borrowers.
