Letter: Dogwood Project

Ann Curtis writes:
Linda, Just curious about whatever happened with the Dogwood Project? Was it a success? Are there still lots of dogwoods around town? --Ann

Ann, thank you for your note - sadly there isn't near enough evidence now of that good effort. It would have been called a success from the amount of fun that was had at the time, however.

Experts: Reduce jail overcrowding or face mass release

By John Cheves, Lexington Herald-Leader

The Kentucky General Assembly must try to solve the crisis of local jail overcrowding, or else the courts could intervene in the next few years and order the mass release of inmates, lawmakers were warned Thursday.

"It behooves legislators to act on this while they still have the freedom to and it is not a federal judge dictating those things," said Josh Crawford, director of criminal justice policy at the Pegasus Institute in Louisville. The legislature's Interim Joint Committee on Local Government heard testimony Thursday from several experts regarding the state's crowded jails and overall trends in incarceration.

Winners and losers in Blackjewel bankruptcy

Unlike miners, this lender to emerge from Blackjewel bankruptcy 'virtually unscathed'

By John Cheves, Lexington Herald-Leader

`Blackjewel LLC filed for bankruptcy July 1 owing $6 million to its 1,700 workers in Wyoming and Central Appalachia, including more than $4,000 in unpaid wages to Kentucky coal miner Chris Rowe in Cumberland. Blackjewel also owed $32 million in loans to Riverstone Holdings, an international investment firm that manages $39 billion in capital. Guess who is likely to get paid in coming weeks. Hint: It isn't Rowe and his fellow miners.

Letter: Mr. Neat was right about 77/78

Billy Joe Fudge writes:
Well, according to Mr. Billy Neat, the winter of 77/78 would not be as bad as the previous winter of 76/77. I will admit that a lot depends upon the definition of "bad" but I would say that all things being equal Mr. Neat was correct. Of course, given that the winter of 76/77 produced a six week period of record cold so intense that grave diggers found frost 48 inches deep in the ground; one would suppose that a half-way weather cognizant 6 year old could have made that prediction. I would surmise that a decade or two of weather like 76/77 would have produced a fairly good crop of permafrost around these parts. --BJF

August 20, 1977 Around Adair with Ed Waggener

This actually ran under the heading "Columbia Developments" in the August 20, 1977 issue of the Daily Statesman. Dad saluted retiring postman Ed Wilkinson (with one of his very favorite lessons from Audrey Chelf Waggener), saluted outgoing writer Jackson Brower, who still checks in frequently some 40 years later, lamented the departure of summer writer Debbie Watson, and concluded with a report from noted Cane Valley varmintologist Dr. Billy K. Neat. --Pen

Useful things can be healthy
If there's one man who epitomies the old bit of advice my mother gave me, it's Ed Wilkinson. Mother always sid that you could get all the exercise you need by just working. Wilkinson, who completed 22 years of service with the Columbia Post Office in December, 1976, when he retired, was easily one of the walkingest men in Adair County.

Wilkinson would walk 17 miles each day when he delivered the mail door-to-door, and he would go at a fast pace, too. He was the first city carrier in Columbia.

While doing it, he carried a mail pouch which weighed up to 35 pounds.

Wilkinson was presented with a plaque from the Post Department last Saturday, August 13, which was inscribed "To Ed. R. Wilkinson, 22 years of faithful service." Columbia Postmaster Don Monroe made the presentation.

CPD: Jardinez arrested for abandonment

By Officer Adam Cravens

On Friday, August 23, 2019, officers were dispatched to Columbia Walmart to investigate a report of a number of children being abandoned by a female.

Upon arrival, officers made contact with six children, ranging in age from 6-11, who had been taken inside by an Amanda Jardinez. Jardinez reportedly took the juveniles inside, told them to find a worker to speak with and began to walk out. Three of the juveniles attempted to follow Jardinez back out before she stopped, turned and made them go back inside. She then left with a male subject later identified as James Alex 'Loop' Holovich and Holovich's five year old daughter, driving a blue Dodge Caravan.

Officers made contact with Social Services, and the children were able to be placed with relatives. A warrant was later signed that evening by Columbia Police.

The following evening, Jardinez was located in Pulaski County by the Pulaski County Sheriff's Office and The Kentucky State Police and taken into custody.
