Rep. Miller (Lou-R) proposes tax on e-cigarettes

By Deborah Yetter, Louisville Courier Journal

A group of Kentucky lawmakers, public health officials and advocates will seek to tax electronic cigarettes at the same rate as regular cigarettes, in an effort to fight their wildly popular appeal among youths.

"Adding an excise tax onto the price of e-cigarettes in Kentucky will serve the dual purpose of reducing vaping among teens and pregnant mothers, while also raising badly needed revenue for the state," said Rep. Jerry Miller, a Louisville Republican who will sponsor the bill in 2020. Miller and other key Republican legislators held a news conference Tuesday to announce their support for the plan.

How hot has July really been?

By Stuart A. Foster
State Climatologist for Kentucky

At the Bowling Green-Warren County Regional Airport, the official source of temperatures collected by the National Weather Service for the city, the average temperature through the first 21 days of July has been 81.1 degrees, or 2.4 degrees above normal. Taking a closer look, however, tells a different story. The average daily high temperature has been 90.1, only 0.8 degrees above normal. Meanwhile, the average low temperature of 72.1 is 4.2 degrees above normal.

Normal temperatures are based on observed temperatures over the period 1981-2010. New normals will be calculated after 2020 by the National Centers for Environmental Information to reflect the period 1991-2020.

Online tool to help Kentuckians explore career pathways

To access the Career Explorer Tool, visit kystats.ky.gov/CareerExplorer.

By Danielle Jones

Frankfort, KY - The Kentucky Center for Statistics (KYSTATS) within the Education and Workforce Development Cabinet (EWDC) has launched a free, online Career Explorer Tool to allow students and job seekers to explore careers matching their knowledge, skills and abilities (KSAs).

Designed by KYSTATS, a recognized leader in data platforms, the new Career Explorer Tool was developed with grant funding from the Workforce Data Quality Initiative. The tool is designed to help Kentuckians explore careers based on four different criteria: Expected Knowledge, Skills & Abilities; Desired Salary; Major or Certification; and Desired Occupation.

KSAs are often utilized by hiring professionals to define the requirements of a job opening and how well a candidate matches those qualifications. The Career Explorer Tool allows job seekers and students to understand the requirements of a career prior to submitting an application or enrolling within an education or training program.

Mystery answer: Black walnut caterpillars molting

Marie Freeman writes:
I took the mystery picture on my black Walnut tree in my front yard this past week. When I first saw it I thought, "what in the world is that?" I blew on it and it moved so I knew something was alive.

After researching, I determined that they are Walnut Caterpillars. They look this way when they molt.

There’s some controversy about destroying them because of the valuable parasites that use them as a host. However, it can be devastating to your tree. So I took a glove and removed them into a bag.

CPD: Hit and Run driver charged

NOTE: an earlier version of the headline of this article incorrectly stated that the driver who left the scene was arrested. The headline has been corrected to match Officer Cravens' report.

By Officer Adam Cravens

The Columbia Police Department responded to a hit and run, three vehicle collision on Jamestown Street on Monday evening, July 22, 2019.

Cheyayne Coffey, 25, of Columbia had stopped her 2013 GMC Terrain waiting to turn on Montgomery Street when a teal 1996 Toyota Corolla failed to stop and made contact with a 2008 Ford Fusion operated by Brandon Bair, 18, also of Columbia, who was stopped behind Coffey. The impact sent Bair's vehicle into Coffey's, causing damage to both automobiles.

The operator of the Corolla did not stop and fled the scene.

The Corolla was later located parked and abandoned at the Jim Blair Center. Contact was made the same evening with Austin Arnold, 19, of Columbia, who was confirmed as the driver at the time of the accident. Arnold was charged with leaving the scene of an accident/failure to render aid.
