Letter: On sleeping outside in hot weather Comments re article 105218 Meanwhile back in the Shire July 1934 By Billy Joe Fudge My Dad, Ordell Fudge, who passed in 2009 was born in November of 1925, and would have been 8 during the Summer of 1934. Dad loved all the seasons but his favorites would have been Fall and Winter. Although he loved both because it was a time for hunting and trapping, which were his passion; he loved the cooler and even cold weather. When folks would lament his love for the cold, he would always say, "you can put on enough clothes to stay warm but you can't take off enough to get cool"! Meanwhile, back in the Shire: July, 1934 Eighty-five years ago, as July 1934 began nudging toward August, a blistering heat wave continued its stifling, suffocating grip on the nation, as it had done for the better part of four weeks; the Depression, nearing the end of a fifth miserable year, showed no signs of relenting; and federal agents, acting on tip, took out John Dillinger, "one of the most dangerous desperadoes of the day," in a hail of bullets as he exited a movie house in Chicago. By JIM But meanwhile, back in the Shire... The News reported that on Monday, July 23, 1934, the mercury in Columbia and neighboring Greensburg soared to 107 degrees, with many older Adair Countians claiming this was "the most intense heat on record over a long period." The paper further stated many homes were so hot at night, even ones generally comfortable in the summer months, residents had to move outside to sleep. And too, it noted, "Every available swimming hole within a radius of thirty miles has been crowded with bathers for several days." (This was but one of an incredible string of heat waves across America in the 1930s.) At the order of the City Council, many of Columbia's streets had been much improved in recent days. All the major side streets, including the ones leading to Lindsey Wilson and the Columbia Graded and High School, had been graded and given a macadam surface. Letter: Pension politics raises questions Ann Pearson writes: Maybe I just don't know who things work but why are taxpayer funds going to fund government employees pensions? If I want a pension I have to pay into it and that's it, if I don't put into it then I don't have anything. Why are excess funds that could be used in our schools and other such needful places going to pay pensions for those who have more money than most tax payers in the first place? What happened to their money? Was it mismanaged, lost? Carol Perkins: Advenures in Italy, Part 1 Read all of Carol's Adventures in Italy: Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3 | Part 4 By Carol Perkins In planning for our vacation with the youngest grandchild, Noah, Guy suggested we go to Italy where he spent Christmas of 1966 (Navy) in Genoa and has wanted me to see the Vatican since his visit to the country. I began to plan. Rome, Florence, and Venice were the destinations I wanted us to see, with three days in each. I prepared Noah by sending him a young person's guide to Italy (which I could understand better than some I'd read) and he was ready to go! I prepared myself by getting another shot in the knee! We left Nashville, flew to Atlanta, and then nine hours to Rome, arriving a different day and time zone. The first night there I had booked a sunset tour called, "Rolling Rome." A golf cart ride took us to all the highlights of the Old City, which included every structure anyone could want to see. The young Italian driver had studied in the U.S. and had spent a semester at Campbellsville University. Legislature to hear pension bills from Democrats and Republicans By John Cheves and Jack Brammer, Lexington Herald-Leader Republican Gov. Matt Bevin wanted the special legislative session he called this week to consider only his own proposed changes to the state pension system. Lawmakers had other ideas when they convened Friday morning. The Republican-controlled Kentucky House referred three bills to a committee hearing Saturday -- Bevin's plan and two Democratic alternatives. Bevin's detailed, five-page call for the special session was narrowly tailored, instructing the General Assembly to consider the one pension bill that he favored.
