Letter: Teachers touch the future

James Carmicle writes:
So true. Students know when they are respected and return that respect. Never underestimate a caring, kind and courteous teacher. Learning never stops and effective teachers instill motivation, inspiration and courage in all students. We may not always remember every name, but they never, and I mean NEVER forget the great, caring and respectful teachers who guided their paths to success and happiness. Teachers touch the future--they teach! --James

Jewish Hospital suspending heart transplants

By Grace Schneider, Louisville Courier Journal

The announcement Thursday that Jewish Hospital would suspend its heart transplant program was a blow to an institution that once led the nation as an esteemed leader in heart care and innovative medical procedures.

The decision directly affects 32 people on the hospital's waiting list for new hearts. Once the program is halted next month, officials at Jewish Hospital are expected to help them transition to other transplant programs -- and there's only one other program for adults in the state at the University of Kentucky.

Letter: Response to Thursday's haiku of the day

Kathy Parker writes:
Very strict teachers
Like mothers in charge
Teach respect and borders

I disagree that strict teachers are like spiders devouring their prey. As a retired strict teacher, my students knew what their boundaries were and respected me as their teacher. They were much happier and felt safer in my classroom than with teachers who didnt have rules and chaos reigned.

Children thrive and flourish when they know a bully won't get them, a fair teacher will treat them with respect, and there is no danger around them. My rules were the same for all my students, and the hugs I received when they left each day were freely given and lovingly returned. This world needs more strict teachers. --Kathy
