Letter: Which vinegar for raccoons?

Mary knight writes:
Linda-Sorry you had to go thru the raccoon trauma/destruction, but we sure did get a kick out of your story. Just think, maybe the children of these guys will be around to visit you next 4th of July!!!! Good luck--did you use white vinegar, or cider vinegar? --Mary

Hi Mary - shudder the thought that there could be another set of quadruplets to celebrate the holiday here next year!! The mix was white vinegar and water, about half and half. Works great to clean cabinets and stainless steel sinks and now I know it works to run off varmints!!! I'll keep the spray bottle by the door! -- Linda

October 21, 1977 Around Adair with Ed Waggener

The article below first appeared in the October 21, 1977, edition of the Daily Statesman. Topics included an ongoing issue with traffic on the square, mints-as-change during a penny shortage, and the beginning of the Dogwood Project, which might have single-handedly put Columbia 40 years ahead of the curve in responding to climate change.

The photo that Bob Hill called about had pride-of-place in our family living room for years, and I remember a high school friend, the late Shannon Rainwater, walking in to our house for the first time in the late 1980's and wondering why in the world we had a picture of his grandfather on the wall. --Pen

By Ed Waggener

Bob Hill, roving columnist for the Courier-Journal, called yesterday from Webb's Cross Roads to ask about Mr. Ernest Rainwater's mighty big pumpkin up at Knifley. "Was that trick photography?" he asked. I assured him it was not. Now, the perspective is somewhat flattering to the pumpkin, as a comparison of the two accompanying photographs indicates, but it was no trick, Mr. Hill.

Adair County, in particular Knifley and environs, is the garden spot of the world. We just grow things better here, whether it be elephant ear plants, Holstein cows, medical doctors, beautiful girls, pumpkins, or newspaper editors.

But trick photography? There's no way to make a 185-pound pumpkin anything but big. Former agriculture Commissioner Wendell Butler often said, "It takes a mighty big hog to weigh 1,000 pounds." I think that he would also say that it takes a mighty big pumpkin to weigh 185 pounds.

The selfless brave-a villanelle for Sparky

The selfless brave
-a villanelle for Sparky (first published on CM 07/09/2012)
Too seldom do we praise the selfless brave,
those caring ones who join a band of brothers
who perils face both life and goods to save.

Their care permits our living outside cave
within which seeking seeming safety smothers.
Too seldom do we praise the selfless brave.

Their diligence our paths with calmness pave,
what greater gifting by devoted others
who perils face both life and goods to save.

Our common days are filled with what we crave,
the wanting needless when we see another's.
Too seldom do we praise the selfless brave.

Our special days are marked by what they gave,
those daughters, sons, those siblings, fathers, mothers
who perils face both life and goods to save.

To those who strive that freedom's banners wave,
our thanks for daily life that safety covers.
Too seldom do we praise the selfless brave,
who perils face both life and goods to save.

- Robert Stone, 8 July 2012

Jim Beam spill leads to fish kill in Kentucky River

By John Mura/Robin Hartman

Frankfort, KY - The Kentucky River is increasingly showing the effects of the alcohol that spilled into Glenns Creek as a result of the July 2 fire at the Jim Beam bourbon warehouse in Woodford County.

Teams from the Kentucky Energy and Environment Cabinet, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and representatives from Beam Suntory, along with three teams from the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources have been on the river this week, sampling water oxygen levels and documenting the number of fish killed. In addition to the assessment teams, there are teams on the river conducting active aeration to mitigate some of the effects to the aquatic life.

Letter: More praise for the Farmers Market

Maury E Lewis writes:
I enjoyed shopping at the Farmers Market today. I bought corn that is so good, green beans (enough to put some in the freezer), Kohlrabi, and Donna gave me one large tomato that the slice was big enough to cover a slice of bread to make me my first tomato sandwich for the summer. Donna said it was Davids favorite tomato and I can see why, SOOOO GOOOOD. --Maury

Fireworks, thunder and things that go bump in the night

By Linda Waggener

Fireworks boomed, thunder rumbled, and something crashed on the back porch.

It was past bedtime when I heard a thud and then a crash on the back porch.

Fireworks had been booming all around town for two days and thunder rumbled from passing storms, yet this sound was different and worrisome. I tried to assume it was just animals searching for food but it kept happening every few minutes.

Using the "hue" gift from my friend Connie, I turned on the back porch light from my cell phone and thought, "Ha, that will surprise and stop the noise maker."

It did not.
