Ninety years ago: late June into early July 1929

As June 1929 edged into July, any whispers of the looming national -- and international -- financial crisis seemed not to have reached The Shire, and life there continued undisturbed.

By JIM

In Columbia, several business changes had just occurred or were in the works. W.R. Conover had purchased of Bannard Coomer a half interest in the Farmers Store, Mr. Coomer having secured a position in Chicago with a short start date. The Rosenblatt Produce House had recently completed a move to "the concrete building just vacated by Bennett Motor Co." The Columbia branch of Rosenblatt's had opened in the Sam Lewis business house on Page Alley (near the Well Walk) almost exactly five months earlier. Their new quarters had been put up in 1924 by Mr. Albin Murray. It later housed Rives Kerbow's Dr. Pepper bottling and distribution center.

And too, Mr. Horace Walker, always involved in something, was putting up a new edifice on his lot "behind Barger Bro. Store and beside the News office." Said the paper, "Mr. Walker plans to have an up-to-date shop when the new structure is completed."

Letter: An artist with the lens

Mike Watson writes:
Tiffany Hadley Kessler is an artist with the lens. There have been shots made from the same vantage points in the past, with none, in my opinion, with the clarity of these gems. Add this to Tiffany's previous renderings of Columbia and Adair County and an exibit and/or coffee table book should be in the offing! --MW

July 4, 1980 Around Adair with Ed Waggener

The article below first appeared in the July 4, 1980 edition of the Daily Statesman. There are a lot of people hard at work to get the 2019 Adair County Fair ready to kick off on Thursday, July 11, and this article is an appreciation of the people who were working on the fair back in 1980. There's also a remembrance of fairs from the 50's and 60's. --Pen

By Ed Waggener

"Our county fair is the best county fair," to paraphrase the title song from the movie "State Fair," "the best county fair in our county."

Time was, we didn't make that claim.

Time was, we admitted that Russell County had the best county fair in the state, or even Shelby County.

But today, everybody in Adair County will own that the best county fair is right here in Columbia.

The reason the Adair County fair stays the best is the people behind it. People like President Joe Johnson; Vice President Samuel Wilson, Secretary-treasurer Edgar Troutman, and Assistant Secretary-treasurer James Wilkinson.

Telephone Trivia from 1936

By Jim

This great local filler appeared on page one of the August 26, 1936 Adair County News:
Which name do you think appears most often in the Columbia telephone directory?

The answer is "Walker," with eleven subscribers of that name.

Cundiffs are second, with seven, and Murrells are third, with six.
The Walkers almost certainly included the John Lee Walker family; Doc; Lola (Ella's mother and Nat's mother-in-law), the Howard Walker family; the James W. Walker family; and the Allen Walker family.

The Cundiffs likely included Horace & Victoria and Rollin & Lenora; and among the Murrells, Edna; and the John & Dorothy Murrell family.

Bevin and Beshear split the week in federal courts

Frankfort, KY - On Thursday, June 27, 2019, a lawsuit Attorney General Andy Beshear and the Jefferson County Teachers Association filed to stop the governor's "sickout subpoenas" and to prevent Bevin from fining teachers up to $1,000 per day for allegedly using sick days to attend rallies in support of public education, was returned to state court by a federal judge.

Judge Danny C. Reeves of the Eastern District of Kentucky granted Beshear's motion to remand, ordering the case sent back to state court because all of the issues in the complaint involve Kentucky law. In a press release, Beshear called the Governor's effort to remove this case to federal court "a stall tactic intended to further intimidate our Kentucky teachers."

On Friday, June 28, 2019, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit denied EMW Women's Surgical Center's petition for rehearing of the House Bill 2 ultrasound case, which the Governor's legal team is defending.

HB 2 (2017) requires an abortion provider to provide mothers with an ultrasound and a description of what it depicts, as well as the opportunity to hear the fetal heartbeat, before she chooses to terminate her pregnancy. In a press release, the Governor's office called the ruling "a major pro-life victory for Gov. Matt Bevin," and chided the Attorney General for not defending the law.
