Letter: Ms. Olson channeled Meryl Streep

Billy Joe Fudge writes:
I cannot imagine a scene with more arresting qualities desiring of artistic reproduction than this "Out of Africa", rock pile perch overlooking an African Savanna. Ms. Olson, without wrinkling the brow has channeled Meryl Streep right down to the posture, demeanor and the movie's pre-WWII fashionable attire.

Ms. Olson's obvious ease in occupying, not just space, but a place is uncanny. A place, this place, atop limestone rocks whose broad shoulders once provided foundation for a necessary and beautiful span across The River Green for a century point five, is seemingly timeless. One can almost feel the Westerly breeze gently lifting Box Elder leaves Eastward while the warm breeze rustles warm season grasses fitting for the grandest of Savannas.

And of course, I'm sure this masterpiece is a fitting nominee to CM's Top Ten Photographs of 2019 List.--BJF

CU Away students meet with Washington, D.C. media pros

By Ariel C. Emberton

Campbellsville, KY - Seven students had the opportunity to study in Washington, D.C. as part of the first CU Away trip offered by Campbellsville University. Students visited various media outlets and locations during their 11-day trip.

"Students get tired of listening to teachers and to have an opportunity to hear from those who do what we talk about reinforces what we talk about," Jeannie Clark, assistant professor of broadcasting and director of broadcast services, said.

"When they see professionals using what we try to teach them out in the field it helps them to understand that there is a real reason for what we try to convey to them during college," Clark said.

Letter: What caused power outage on Combest Drive?

Maury E Lewis writes:
Our power went out on Combest Drive off of Hwy 92 at 4:30pm, and when we returned from church it was still out and stayed out till 10:30pm. Does anyone out in magazine-land know what caused the outage yesterday?

There is a power pole leaning between Highway mile markers 7 and 8 on 55 South. It is being held up by the lines that are attached to it. 6/24/2019 at 12:32pmCT --Maury
Maury, thanks for writing. Hopefully some of our readers can provide more information on the cause of yesterday's outage. We do know that road crews and utility workers have been putting in long hours getting everything back to normal after thunderstorms passed through on Friday.

Who are you calling ugly?

By Don Wilkins, The Messenger-Inquirer

No one understands beauty is in the eye of the beholder more than West Louisville farmer Keith Riney. For more than 30 years, Riney has offered what some people call "ugly" tomatoes or what he refers to as "seconds" or "canners." "I've sold to groceries and restaurants and everybody wants a beautiful tomato," Riney said. "And they don't want to pay top dollar for anything that's not." Still, Riney guarantees his seconds will always taste better than they look.

Major Fish Habitat Restoration Project on Barren River Lake

Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife

Frankfort, KY - Extensive fish-attracting habitat was recently placed in the Peter Creek arm of Barren River Lake this past week, thanks to a collaborative effort between the Fisheries Division of the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources, public volunteers and other agency partners.

Crews placed trees, wooden pallets with tree branches attached, large artificial trees constructed to withstand weathering and rot and commercially made fish habitat in Barren River Lake.

"This is part of our ongoing effort to restore fish habitat in our larger reservoirs," said Ron Brooks, director of Fisheries for Kentucky Fish and Wildlife. "This is the first year of a three-year large-scale habitat restoration project on Barren River Lake."

Fight Ticks with Four Simple Steps

Health officials advise precautions to avoid ticks this summer.

By Christina Dettman/Barbara Fox

Frankfort, KY - With the arrival of warmer weather and tick season underway in Kentucky, officials with the Kentucky Department for Public Health (DPH) within the Cabinet for Health and Family Services (CHFS) are reminding people to take precautions against tick bites, which can transmit serious and potentially deadly illnesses.

"Spring and early summer are peak times for tick bites, which coincide with people venturing outdoors in the warmer weather," said Jeff D. Howard, Jr., DPH Commissioner. "It's important that people take preventive measures against tick bites and also check for ticks after visiting affected areas." We encourage everyone to remember these four steps of Protect, Check, Remove and Watch to protect themselves and others from tick bites.
