June 1969--50 Years Ago This Month

By Mike Watson

Time flies when you are having fun, or growing up, or just making a living. These events were extracted from the local newspapers during June 1969:

Five students from Adair County were scheduled to receive degrees from Western Kentucky University on June 6. James Coomer, Mary Glowacki, Larry Webb and Mary Ann Downey were to received Baccalaureate degrees, and Edith Walker was to be awarded a Masters degree.

Bennie Allen Arnold, of Adair County, received the Master of Public Health Degree from Yale University on June 9 at the institution's 268th commencement.

Lot owners in the Long Hunters Subdivision, on old Greensburg Road, came before the Columbia City Council the first Monday night in June, to request annexation into the city.

January 20, 1978 Around Adair with Ed Waggener

I was enjoying rereading one of Dad's favorite stories as a possibility for today, and thought to check first if he'd already published it online. Of course it had already been on CM, so I've picked a different Around Adair to post below for today, but I'm going to post a link to the classic anyway: The Isetta Story.

The article below first appeared in the January 20, 1978 issue of the Daily Statesman. It gives a nice snapshot of the players in city/county politics in late 70's, all while he was holding them to task, in Ed Waggener fashion, to follow the rules when procuring bids for a proposed new $21,000 "micro" computer. --Pen.

Dr. Loy suggests beautification ideas
Dr. Glenn Barry Loy, D.D.S., suggests that Columbians examine what other towns in the South are doing to beautify their communities. He notes that in the January, 1978, issue of Southern Living, special articles tell about Jonesboro, Tennessee; Lancaster, Texas; Dahlonega, Georgia; Selma, Alabama; and Murfreesboro, North Carolina. "Some of the town leaders might visit these towns and see how they handled the beautification projects," Dr. Loy said. Two of the towns are within five hours of Columbia.

Jonesboro is near Johnson City, Tennessee; and Dahlonega is just south of Chattanooga. The article in Southern Living tells about planning, financing, and implementing the beautification projects. Although the Columbia Beautification Committee is well along with its plans, additional input would most certainly be beneficial.

Present Circuit Court Clerks comments
The present Circuit Court Clerk, Bill Ballou, has the new court system under control. He showed me a stack of cases he has filed with the fines attached.

Beshear: Don't pay up front for student loan debt relief

Scammers are offering the already free service for a fee.

By Crystal Staley/Kenneth Mansfield

Frankfort, KY - - Attorney General Andy Beshear has issued a scam alert to warn former and current college students about companies offering student loan debt relief for a fee.

The third-party companies behind the calls claim to offer document preparation services and pretend they can help you qualify for a loan forgiveness program - but they may want upfront fees and personal and financial information.

Beshear's office and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) say it is illegal for companies to charge upfront fees before providing debt relief services.

Big progress on plans for residential Hospice Home

T. J. Community Mission Foundation receives $2,000,000 USDA REDLG loan through Farmers RECC.

By Stacey Biggs

Glasgow, KY - The T. J. Community Mission Foundation has received a $2 Million USDA Rural Economic Development Loan (REDLG) through Farmers RECC to aid in construction of the Shanti Niketan Hospice Home.

In 2015 the board of directors of the T. J. Community Mission Foundation identified a critical need in our community for a residential hospice home for patients facing end-of-life care and where families can seek a place of comfort, counseling, and compassionate treatment in a home-like setting.

The immediate goal of the T. J. Community Mission Foundation was to invite the community and larger region to join together in establishing a Hospice Home. Fundraising began through local community events, private and corporate donations, etc.

The name Shanti Niketan was selected by lead philanthropic supporter, Dr. Bharat Mody. In his native language, Shanti means "inner peace." The full name translates to "a peaceful place."
