Letter: Remembering Ed

Mitzi writes:
Thank you Billy Joe for all the kind words about my Uncle Ed (NMN) Waggener. I have laughed about that all my life.

I so miss our talks, his wit and knowledge of many things. He was not above having you on the edge of your seat, ears glued to his big story and then... Yep!! It was a big STORY by Uncle Ed. --Mitzi

Kentucky State Police Commissioner Rick Sanders recognized the fallen KSP troopers, officers and highway patrolmen at a memorial service and wreath-laying ceremony on Friday, June 21, 2019. Held at the KSP Training Academy, this service honored the memory of the men who paid the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.

"Law enforcement shows no bounds whether the uniform is brown, green, gray, or blue," said Commissioner Rick Sanders. "We are all one family, we share the same sorrows, and I truly do believe that."

During the 2018 Memorial Service, Commissioner Sanders unveiled a plaque honoring six Kentucky Highway Patrol Officers who died in the line of duty. By Tommy Newton

Bowling Green, KY - A free outdoor festival celebrating the 50th anniversary of the first Moon landing will be hosted at WKU's Hardin Planetarium from 1pmCT to 10pmCT on Saturday, July 20, 2019. The event features dozens of interactive exhibits, challenges and activities for all ages.

"This festival is going to be out of this world," said Richard Gelderman, Director of Hardin Planetarium.

The festival will take place rain or shine, with the outdoor events mostly located in covered areas. "People will walk around the planetarium and adjacent science buildings, going at their own pace to explore all of the wide variety of opportunities," Gelderman said.

Planetarium Coordinator Ronn Kistler added that the Moon Landing Celebration will give someone an opportunity to "talk with experts about the Moon, what it took to send humans across a quarter of a million miles of empty space to our nearest celestial neighbor, and why the moon landing was so important."

Letter: Remembering Andi

Mitzi writes:
Andi was one of the sweetness little gals you could ever be around. Just to see her face or think about her put a big smile on your face. She was all about family, the love she had for her husband Bob Chelf and her beautiful daughters and granddaughters.

The Chelf/Waggener family is heart broken. Prayers please for all of her family in the coming weeks. --Mitzi

Letter: Scotty Hedgespeth speaks on turtles and their ways

Scotty Hedgespeth, a Taylor County reader and contributor to columbiamagazine.com, wants to help answer the question, "Why did the turtle cross the road."

Scotty said, "according to local folk lore of around the WWII generation age, the Tarpan - city people say Tairpan - locals also called 'em Box or Land Turtles - well, locals said when you see 'em crossing the road they're going to higher ground and it means it's gonna come a goose-drownin' rain within 24 hours - so don't cut hay!"
