Kentucky Color: On turtles and terrapins

Comments re: Photo 84152 Tiny Terrapin

By Billy Joe Fudge

It can be dangerous for one's reputation to delve into areas of unfamiliarity but here I go again. First, this little one appears to be a Snapping Turtle rather than a Terrapin.

All terrapins I've had the pleasure of encountering have very complicated and showy markings on their shells and on their legs. This one has the mundane markings on the shell and the tell-tell leathery armor on the legs of the Snapping Turtle.

Second, as to the reason one never sees one of these slow moving creatures traveling with the direction of traffic rather than their apparent nature of crossing the flow of traffic, I have no idea but I compliment your powers of keen observation and thank you for raising our awareness to this phenomenon of nature which should be studied in the near future by the Great Wooded South University's Research Department.
