Carol Perkins: Pretty is as pretty does

Previous Column: Finding the right doctor

By Carol Perkins

Pretty is as pretty does. We have heard this adage and know the truth in it. A beautiful girl can turn ugly fast if she is full of herself, rude, or behaves inappropriately. The same is true with men.

This brings me to the topic of today. "The Bachelorette." That naughty, vulgar, sickening, and crude TV show that more people watch than make up the population of Kentucky has turned into one of the highest grossing TV shows in ABC's history. Those viewers, including men, are members of the Bachelor Nation.

I am one of those people who started years ago when the bachelorette did not kiss every stranger as soon as he stepped foot out of a car or embrace every stranger who smiled at her.

WKU Professor to be Expert Reviewer for International Climate Change Assessment

Dr. Jason Polk, Associate Professor of Geography and Geology and Director of the WKU Center for Human GeoEnvironmental Studies (CHNGES), has been selected to join a team of international scientists to serve as an Expert Reviewer for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) AR6: The Physical Basis, the next global report on the current status of climate change science.

Dr. Polk was selected because of his research expertise on reconstructing past climate conditions from environmental records preserved in caves and sediments and, more recently, his work at WKU with students that involves studying carbon fluctuations from large reservoirs previously understudied in extreme environments, including rapidly melting glaciers in Iceland and groundwater systems at Mammoth Cave National Park, home to the longest cave in the world.
