September 30, 1977 Around Adair with Ed Waggener This article first appeared in the September 30, 1977, Daily Statesman, and I was struck by several echoes to the news some 40 years later. Jody Richards speaking at a local dinner, Pam Hoots making news, and welding as a lucrative career option, among other things. --Pen By Ed Waggener I made a big haul day before yesterday, for my wife Linda, the builder, in a pickup truck she borrowed from my brother-in-law, Peanut McKinley. The cargo was a spiral staircase for the house Linda is making out of a barn. She hunted a long time before finding a man who would do a quality job at a very reasonable price. Frank Furlong of Glasgow is a craftsman, and he painstakingly welds the spiral stairs, custom made for each house. So far, he says, he has made 50 of them just this year. "I retired once," Furlong says, "but people kept after me, so I went back to work. It's hard, dirty work, and young 'uns won't get into it today.' That's a pity. The work Furlong does is in great demand, and he himself says he's satisfied with the money. Trabue Open House By George Kolbenschlag About 35 interested citizens took advantage of the open house at Columbia's historic Trabue-Russell house this weekend. The house, completed in 1823 by Daniel Trabue, one of Columbia's founders, serves as a showplace for information and historic items from Adair County's past. While Trabue built and lived in the house for several years, the Russell family also played an important role in the house and occupied it for about 100 years. Daniel Trabue was an early frontiersman who came to what is now Adair County in the early 1800s. He served in the Revolutionary War and was granted land here for his service. Trabue, Creed Haskins and William Caldwell provided the land that is now Columbia's City Square. Today the house is owned by the City of Columbia. The historic furniture, photos, documents, paintings and other items offer a view into Columbia's notable past. Opinion: Competition hasn't affected price of gas Commentary by A Concerned Citizen* Concerning item number two on this story, the idea of real competition is only true with regards to which station a consumer purchases fuel. In no apparent way has the opening of the station improved the price of gasoline in Columbia, KY. To see where prices are cheaper, visit gasbuddy.com. At this moment, gas is as much as 35 cents per gallon cheaper in Lexington, 34 cents cheaper in London, 23 cents cheaper (for the same Marthon gas as at Pinewood's Magic Market) in E-town, and 14 cents cheaper (ditto on the Marathon gas) at Campbellsville. This reader is finding it difficult to understand in what way the citizens of Columbia have benefited from another gas station. Another drug store/pharmacy might as well have been built in that it would have done just as much good.
