Key Republican says Bevin's pension relief bill doesn't have enough votes

By Jack Brammer, Lexington Herald-Leader

Gov. Matt Bevin's proposed special legislative session to consider a pension relief bill appears to be unraveling before it ever starts. Senate Majority Floor Leader Damon Thayer said Monday that he has been told by several people that there are not enough votes in the Republican-led House to approve Bevin's proposed bill.

Thayer, R-Georgetown, also said he would urge the Republican governor against calling a special session if the only action lawmakers are willing to take is freezing the pension contribution rates for regional universities and quasi-public agencies for a year.

WKU considering $10M more in budget cuts

By Aaron Mudd, Bowling Green Daily News

Expecting additional enrollment decline, Western Kentucky University is weighing a plan to cut $10,177,000 from its fiscal year 2020 budget - $3.4 million of which would come from the university's academic colleges.

The proposed cuts, on top of previous cuts of about $27 million, have WKU faculty "weary" of having to do more with less, according to the University Senate chairman. The new budget cut plan is a result of recommendations from two university committees, and it was introduced to WKU's Board of Regents in agenda materials for the group's second quarterly meeting Friday.

Letter: Mural ideas

Maury E Lewis writes:
I think the wall where the Farmers Market is would be a great wall to paint a mural.

At one time I had said something about a mural of a farmers market painted on it would be good but maybe not anymore. Maybe some old picture of how Columbia used to look. --Maury

New resource to aid state's workforce development efforts

By Danielle Jones/Todd Piccirilli

Frankfort, KY - Kentucky's workforce is ever-changing. By the year 2020, it is projected that 63 percent of Kentucky jobs will require some postsecondary education or advanced training to meet workforce demands. Currently, Kentucky is facing a shortage of highly skilled workers to fill the approximately 115,000 open jobs available in the Commonwealth.

To help address Kentucky's workforce demands, KET and the Kentucky Education and Workforce Development Cabinet (EWDC) unveiled a new resource, In Demand, to aid the state's workforce development efforts and recruit Kentuckians into high-demand career sectors.

In Demand is a collection of videos with an accompanying website that provide an overview of careers available in Kentucky's five high-demand sectors: advanced manufacturing, business & IT, construction, healthcare, and transportation & logistics. Individuals interested in learning more about how to pursue careers in high-demand sectors are referred to their local Kentucky Career Center for skills training and career placement services.

Pops of color and a celebration of our city's history

By Tiffany Kessler

As growth and activity around the historic Columbia Square has increased over the past couple of years, so have ideas and the potential projects.

Local artist and Adair County High School Art teacher Cayce Davenport was in attendance Monday night for the May City Council meeting. Mayor Pam Hoots has been working with Davenport on possibly creating a Columbia-themed mural.

Still in the design phase, Davenport submitted sketches and took recommendations from council members. If approved, she would be hired this summer to paint a Columbia-themed logo agreed upon by the mayor and council members.

Carol Perkins: I blame the bed

Previous column: Bless your heart

By Carol Perkins

Suspended in the air, flailing my arms, holding onto my CPAP mask and tube, I felt myself sliding off the mattress with no control. Kerplunk. I hit the floor, banging my head against the nightstand. What just happened?

I was confused and disoriented. Had I just fallen out of the bed? No doubt about it; I was sitting on the floor between the bed and chair in the tiny cabin on our cruise ship in the middle of the Pacific. Where was Guy? Asleep in the twin bed only a few feet few from me. He didn't move and I didn't wake him. Never in all my years have I fallen out of a bed.

In the darkness of the room, I sat quietly to regain my composure and wait for the beat of my heart to go back to normal.
