Letter - could have been Cane Valley Bank

Hunter Durham writes:
None of the Stotts Phelps McQueary funeral home was never a part of a jail. The jail was a house with the jail attached which is where the current Adair County Regional Jail is. The best guess is that this was the bank in Cane Valley. Maybe the dedication of the building. --HHD

Old Knifley photo - guessing it might be county jail

Robert Cumming writes:
Judging from the amount of bars on the building windows and porch it must be the county jail. The period dress of the crowd looks like late 1800s and possibly a public hanging event on the square. --Robert Cumming

Groundhog Day - sun would have allowed for morning shadow

As this, February 2, is Groundhog Day 2019, we hope to have action pictures coming in. There's no question but what he would have seen his shadow in the sun of this morning in Adair County, so what's that mean here?

Grandparents always say that if the shadow is present on this day, it means there will be six weeks of bad winter weather to come.

And then there's this weather comment from JIM:
"February will be a month of storms -- violent storms and blizzards, wind, rain, sleet, and snow will prevail, covering the entire country. The precipitation during the month will be the heaviest known in years, and will consist principally of sleet and snow, accompanied at times by heavy gales. The rainfall will be light and of short duration, except over the Southern and Gulf States." (Transcribed from the February 3, 1904 edition of the Adair County News.)

Letter: White horse brings back spit, smack and wish

Cynthia A. Meyer writes:
When I was in elementary school, one of my readers had a story that if you see a white horse you are supposed to spit in your right hand, make a wish, and then hit your spitted hand with your left fist. My Mother, being an avid bingo player, was not one to let any opportunity that might enhance her chances of winning the jackpot slip past.

So, every week on the way to the bingo hall, my parents would pass the same pasture with a white horse in it, and without fail, right as clockwork, my Mother would perform her weekly "spit, smack and make a wish" ritual. My Father would always rise his right arm to shield himself from any wishful spittle, and would complain that Mother would have to wash the windshield if she kept up her ritual.

Both Mother and Father have passed on, and no, I do not spit, smack and wish when I see a white horse, however seeing one does bring back fond memories though. Thank you for the refresher. --Cynthia

By Bill Ragle, Jr (Anderson, Indiana)

To a wonderful lady. As a kid growing up in Anderson, IN, westside Jackson Park, we all went to the same Church. She played the Piano and sang with my mother and dad besides my dear Aunt Edna Stohler Rigney. I knew Sister Ruthie's parents. Didn't come much greater.

Blair Park, the little acre park at the old Columbia fairgrounds and needed sidewalks all may qualify if there are projects to write about - Hilda Legg said the hardest thing about qualifying for funding is having a desire/plan so it can be brought into focus. Do we have a wish list for what we want to improve?

By John Mura/Lisa Evans

Frankfort, KY - The Kentucky Energy and Environment Cabinet is accepting grant proposals for projects that promote the use of recycled Kentucky tires.

The cabinet is seeking grant applications for landscaping mulch projects, walking trails, pour-in-place playgrounds, sidewalks or other surfaces, horse trailer or stall mats, tree wells or other products that use recycled Kentucky tires.

Projects that are not eligible for grant funding include athletic field or loose crumb-rubber playground applications, tire-derived aggregate, tire-derived fuel, rubber-modified asphalt or civil engineering projects.
