January 1943: Victory tax; society news; around the square; a maimed merchant

Early to mid-January 1943 found several things of national interest astir. Beginning the first of the year, nearly all wages other than for military personnel were subject to a five percent "Victory Tax". Old automobiles and trucks were being rounded up to convert the metal in them to weapons of war, and Roosevelt and Churchill met at Casablanca to plan strategy. Shoe rationing was coming in early February and just days later, the bloody Battle of Kasserine Pass in Tunisia would (Vence Giles was killed in that conflict, and the Germans took Charlie Beard and Ulis Hoover prisoners of war.)

But meanwhile, back in The Shire...

The Inroad correspondent reported Fred Rowe recently had bought of Dewey Turner a nice bunch of pigs, and that Pvt. Cameron Watson, stationed at Ft. Knox, had spent the weekend with his folks, Mr. and Mrs. Milton Watson. (Before the war ended, Mr. and Mrs. Watson had four sons in service.) And too, state engineers had been in the vicinity, "surveying the right-of-way for the continuance of the road to the Cumberland County line."

The reporter from Ruby kept it short, stating that Christmas passed off quietly with but a handful of weddings and that farmers were delivering their tobacco to markets.

Juvenile Black Carp Discovered in Western KY

Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife

Frankfort, KY - A juvenile black carp has been discovered in Ballard County, according to the Fisheries Division of the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources. The fish, a member of the invasive Asian carp species, came from Gar Creek near the Ohio River.

"Assuming this fish was spawned locally, it provides further evidence that black carp are becoming more established in the lower Ohio River drainage in Kentucky," said Fisheries Biologist Matt Thomas. "The specimen was verified as a black carp by experts at the U.S. Geological Survey Environmental Research Center."

Black carp are native to Asia and look similar to grass carp. They first came to the United States in the 1970s accidentally mixed in with imported grass carp. Black carp cause serious concern because they feed on native snails and mussels. They are part of a group of Asian carp that pose a threat to native fisheries.

Sen. Max Wise's Legislative Update - Fri 11 Jan 2019

Senator Wise reports on beginning of the 2019 regular session.
Personal political commentary/opinions of the writer

By State Senator Max Wise, (R-Campbellsville)
16th District: Adair, Clinton, Cumberland, McCreary, Russell, Taylor, and Wayne Counties

The first week of the Kentucky General Assembly's 2019 Regular Session is in the books. We had a productive few days in Frankfort and leave in good spirits about what is to come this session.

This week, the Senate's activity involved some procedural measures. We welcomed everyone back to Frankfort to swear in members and confirm the Senate Leadership. Senator Robert Stivers (R-Manchester) will remain the Senate President and Senator David Givens (R-Greensburg) will serve as the new Senate President Pro Tempore. We were also thrilled to officially welcome Senator Matt Castlen (R-Owensboro) and Senator Robby Mills (R-Henderson) as our newest members. Other tasks included confirming new committee appointments and adopting the Senate rules for the 2019 session.

Additionally, the Senate introduced legislation regarding electronic campaign filing, a constitutional amendment moving the statewide election date, and school safety.
