During the past few weeks, Dad and I have talked bout some of our favorite memories. From moving to the [Adair County] farm in 1974 and transitioning from that experience in 1992.

During those years, I can honestly say that everything I value in life, came about from those years. My love of outdoors, great writers and music flourished in that environment. I have such warm memories of taking long walks with him through the woods. He would often quiz me on the genus species of trees and flowers, tell me about the importance of protecting and respecting wildlife.

By Mike Watson

Does a script of "The Tucker Station Affair" exist? There was once a copy at the Adair Public Library in the local history and genealogy collection. I have not looked for it lately, but it was there some years ago when the first Bibliography of Adair County was compiled.

Joyce M. Coomer offers personal comments on Dumpster Diving

Writer offers benefits of Dumpster Diving but only if treasure seekers follow certain rules. She says "There are people who will open every sack in a dumpster and dig through it like a hen scratching for worms. They can and do make an unbelievable mess. They should make sure anything they fling out of the dumpster that they don't want should be put back into the dumpster."

I frequently opine that someone could run a good junk store with items removed from dumpsters in this town. More often than you'd think, many still-useful items are callously tossed into a dumpster, without any regard to their condition nor whether or not someone else could utilize the items, maybe even really need the items.

Cynthia A. Meyer - Comments on Mystery ID 79324 orange fungi

She wonders if it might be "Chicken of the Woods," edible under specific conditions, as is "Hen of the Woods," under specific conditions, a highly prized mushroom which should be gathered only by mushroom experts. Readers are advised that a mistake in identifying mushrooms can be fatal if consumed. The information is posted to raise awareness of mushrooms and hope that one day there will be enough mushroom expertise right here to know the difference, and that maybe, one day mushroom culture and mushroom harvesting in the wild might offer business opportunities here. - CM.

Without a close up of the mushrooms it would be difficult to identify, however there is a tasty little morsel of fungi named "Chicken of the Woods" which not surprisingly is supposed to taste like chicken.

I have seen one other Chicken of the Woods several years ago, but wrongly assumed since it was so brightly colored it may poisonous...

It was not until recently when my son brought in a sister mushroom- "Hen of the Woods" - which looks more like a fluffy hen that I realize what a culinary morsel I passed by back then.

Todd Robertson: Real issue is people searching through businesses' trash

Suggests what is generally referred to as 'dumpster diving' a big problem
Comments re photo 79325 Neighbors are tired of picking up overflow trash Todd Robertson writes:
I think the real issue at hand is people searching through the business's trash receptacles at night. As a business owner we have been dealing with this for a while now. I have also spoken to other business owners across town that are having the same issues. Individuals are coming at night and opening all of the trash bags and they are leaving a huge mess every night.

We have even had entire trash bags taken from our cans. Something needs to be done to stop this but from what I've been told it is not illegal to search through others trash. These people can be cited for littering but until someone catches them it is going to continue. Something seriously needs to be done. Hopefully others will comment and we can work together to get this stopped. --Todd Robertson
Todd, thanks - That element of dumpster diving is an important one, and I'll be the first to agree with you that something needs changing. Hope everyone will have an open view on it. There are places in the world where this isn't a problem. It won't be in the City of Columbia when fiscal court adopts a better system - while stricter policing and heavier penalties might work - this doesn't seem to be a wise use of city or law enforcement resources. The solution may be much simpler, cheaper, and more effective if ordinances are changed - replacing those which don't work with newer simpler one which are efficient, effective, and relative to what we are doing much, much, much cheaper - EW

QUERY: Is a script for Affair at Tucker's Station extant?

Can anybody help locate information on Edith Walker's script for the outdoor drama, "The Affair at Tucker's Station"? which was presented at a one-time amphitheatre on the campus of Lindsey Wilson College?

There is a great deal of interest from CM readers to learn more, especially with the focus this summer on TheatreFest! and Shakespeare in the Barn, as well as the heritage Chestnut Tree this remarkable woman planted at the historic Field House and which is now contributing so much to the beauty of late spring. - EW

FRANKFORT, KY - (15 Jun 2018) - The Carl D. Perkins Vocational Training Center in Johnson County's Thelma community and CVS Health celebrated the grand opening of the CVS Retail Pharmacy Collaborative program and mock pharmacy store on Friday.

The new collaboration will train Kentuckians with disabilities for employment in a retail store such as CVS Pharmacy, and be the first mock pharmacy program in the state, according to a state news release.

CVS Health is providing the Perkins Center with a curriculum, inventory and mock pharmacy store setup for hands-on training for jobs skills such as providing customer service and working at the cash register.

"CVS Health is focused on breaking down employment barriers that individuals with disabilities face, through a proven combination of classroom instruction and on-the-job training," David Casey, vice president, Workforce Strategies and Chief Diversity Officer, said in the news release.

Individuals who complete the initial 12-week front retail store associate training program will qualify to apply for a position at a CVS Pharmacy location. In the future, the collaborative also plans to offer a pharmacy technician program at the center.

For more information about the center, call 606-788-7080 or toll-free in Kentucky, 1-800-443-2187 or for deaf video phone services, 1-866-761-0818.

JIM: One hundred years ago, mid-June, 1918

World War I was raging in Europe, and Green County native George M. Walford was reported to have landed in France. On the home front: Horace Walker was engaged in a painting project at the corner of Greensburg Street & the Public Square.. Hucksters were given stern warnings on handling eggs (self-proctored quiz with this item). Sugar rationing rules were explained. There were New dog laws, an oil boom, and Chief Red Fox appeared in person at Paramount Theater. On the cultural and enlightenment front, both the Lindsey Wilson in Columbia and Russell Creek Academy in Campbellsville had new principals and fund-raising drives. And the war hit home and everyday life, as international policies took away a wonderful business service - likely due to a labor shortage, Jim surmises.

In mid-June, 1918, the conflict in Europe raged on as it had for nearly four years. Already, a number of Adair Countians had fallen and more would die or suffer grievous wounds before the weapons of war fell silent five months later.

Other than the handful of mentions below, little about the war appeared on the front page of the June 19th edition of the News, but no doubt a number of other items caught the collective eye of the readers that long ago late spring.

G. Kolbenschlag on unnecessary and expensive pesticides

Personal commenary: "Some (but few) of the pesticides are necessary tradeoffs, but . . . "

George Kolbenschlag writes:
I agree wholeheartedly with Ed W. and Charles M. (and, of course, Joyce C.) Let's do away with all of the unnecessary and expensive pesticides. Some, (but few) of the pesticides are an acceptable trade-off, but drenching the roadways with the stuff is not wise. Poisoning our soil is damaging to humans, animals and the bio-environment at large. --George Kolbenschlag
