LOUISVILLE, KY (Wed 24 Jan 2018) - United States Attorney Russell M. Coleman today announced the sentence of a Louisville convicted felon, in United States District Court, by Senior Judge Thomas B. Russell, to 110 months in prison, followed by a three year period of supervised release, for threatening to kill a Louisville Metro Police Officer while engaged in the performance of his official duties, and for several firearms violations. There is no parole in the federal system.

Mrs. Tammy Joann Garnes, 75, Columbia, KY (1942-2018)

Mrs. Garnes had made a profession of faith in Christ and was of the Methodist faith. A kind and loving lady, she had a soft spot in her heart for those in need, and adopted and rescued numerous animals, with a special place in her heart for her beloved dog, Little Bit.

Tammy Reeder, 43, Columbia, Adair County, KY (1974-2018)

She was a retired teacher of the Adair County Middle School who faithfully attended the Glensfork Church of the Nazarene. She was a woman of tremendous courage, confident in her trust in Christ in the face of overwhelming odds. She was a member of a leading Adair County family, the daughter of the late Jimmy Bragg and of Betty Wall who survives, as does her husband, Chris Reeder. She leaves two direct living descendants.

Flu Activity Now Epidemic in KY - tips offered to help avoid it

"Widespread influenza activity means that Kentuckians are likely to encounter one or more persons shedding influenza virus at work, at school, while shopping, while traveling, at athletic or entertainment events, and in places of worship. A person who will develop influenza illness actually can transmit the virus to other persons beginning one day before their illness begins." -- Dr. Jeffrey D. Howard, Acting Department for Public Health Commissioner.

FRANKFORT, Ky. (Jan. 24, 2018) - The Department for Public Health, within the Cabinet for Health and Family Services (CHFS), now describes influenza activity in Kentucky as an epidemic. This season's strain of the flu virus can be extremely serious, even deadly, not just for those in higher risk categories but to generally healthy Kentuckians as well. Kentucky is in its sixth consecutive week of widespread flu activity which is the highest level of flu activity and indicates increased flu-like activity or flu outbreaks in at least half of the regions in the state.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) offers the following tips to stop the spread of germs:

The Jessica: it will fund endowment for LWC women's golf

COLUMBIA, KY - A $25,000 gift from Earl & Marlene Smith will endow a new scholarship fund for Lindsey Wilson College women's golfers.

The gift is in honor of the Smith's daughter Jessica, who tragically passed away in an automobile accident on October 2, 2016. Jessica Smith played three seasons for the Lindsey Wilson women's golf program, graduating in 2010.

The Jessica Smith Endowed Scholarship - affectingly called "The Jessica" - will benefit a women's golf student-athlete beginning with the 2018-19 academic year.

Donald Travis Owens, 73, Adair & Jefferson Co./Clinton native (1944-2018)

Don was a graduate of Adair County High School and Western KY University. He loved sports and was particularly accomplished at basketball and golf. He worked as a school counselor in IN, OH, and KY. He was the son of the late J.B. and Mabel Owens. His wife, Joan Gerstle, survives. His direct and step- living descendants include a son, Trent Owens Aaron; a step daughter, Kim Maugans, and four grandchildren. He was a brother of Mike Owens, Columbia, KY; Ron Owens, Bradfordsville, KY, and Margaret Owens Harrison, Chillicothe, Ohio.

Third-graders at CES take a tour of downtown Campbellsville

Campbellsville Elementary School third-graders recently took a tour of downtown Campbellsville.

Students visited Campbellsville Fire & Rescue, Campbellsville Civic Center, Taylor County Courthouse and Taylor County Judicial Center.

They also learned about Campbellsville/Taylor County EMS and Campbellsville Police.

Students heard about fire safety, how city and county governments operate and about how many community helpers keep residents safe.

They also saw where Campbellsville City Council and Taylor County Fiscal Court members meet.

She was a member of a leading Prices Creek, Adair/Metcalfe County, area family. She is remembered for her generously given, heartwarming smiles, her devotion to her family, and her Christian example. Driver of semi goes off shoulder of road. Attempts to bring 2012 Kenworth semi back onto road results in vehicle overturning, losing a load of live chickens. Roadway shut down for approximately seven hours for clean up. William W. Long, Sr., Taylor County, KY (1925-2018)

Mr. Long was a World War II Veteran and was honorably discharged after two years in the Navy. He graduated from the University of Kentucky with an Engineering Decree. As a young man, Mr. Long united in marriage to Marcella Whitlock who preceded him in death September 12, 2009. He leaves 31 direct living descendants. Mr. Long was the owner of W. W. Long Oil Company in Campbellsville, KY from 1968 until he retired. He had made a profession of faith in Christ and was a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church.
