Marsha Walker recalls when Columbia was the weather news

Marsha Walker writes:
In January of 1963, I was at Eastern KY State College in Richmond. Our dorm mother came around one morning to announce we could wear pants to class. This was so exciting! Later that day a weather report said that the temperature in Columbia, KY had reached -30 degrees the night before, the lowest temperature in the nation. Getting to class and back was misery, and I had to do it three times with no gloves. That was a very memorable day. --Marsha Walker

All the hype, hoopla, and near hysteria stirred up by the weather wizards over today's rather modest incoming winter storm gives pause for reflection over what the reaction today would be over a winter like that of 1917-1918, a truly brutal season.
