Addiction, Part II: addicted, out of control, arrested

This is the second of two parts of the story of a young woman who will celebrate 12 years of recovery from addiction this coming November. Click on the link for Part I -- The first part of Misty May’s story shared what happened in her life that took her into years of addiction and gives details about the lifestyle of an addict. In part II, below, she continues with what took place to allow her to turn from addiction and have the possibility of recovering.

By Linda Waggener

"I didn't ever think I would become addicted," Misty May says, "I didn't wake up and want to be a junkie. I didn't believe I'd be left in jail, even after I was arrested. My first call was always to my Mama but this time it would be different. Through those first few days of incarceration, I still thought I could continue to manipulate the system, but in reality I don't know how I was alive.

Jon Halsey says J. Coomer = Voice of Reason

Jon Halsey writes:
J Coomer is the personification of the best description I ever heard regarding the "Voice of Reason": " A person can be the "voice of reason", meaning that in a crazy situation or where people are doing dumb things but no one realises it's crazy or won't say/admit that it's crazy, that person knows better and says "Hang on, what the **** is this? What SHOULD happen is ..." --Jon Halsey

Debbie Sinclair: Betty's is simply awesome

Debbie Sinclair writes:
This place is totally awesome. My only wish for them would be: Please, please, start taking plastic whether it be debit or credit; cost me an extra 3.00 bucks to get cash out of their ATM to pay my bill!!!! Gotta be safer than taking checks😳! Also, kudos to a employee who found my glasses and held them for me until my sweet mama went and picked them up, which were then handed off to the best sister in the world who got them to me! I was only blind for about a week and Ft Knox was happy to know I had them back! - Debbie Sinclair

Carol Perkins: Dog sitting Winston, Part II

Maybe readers of the first installment can guess the decision Carol made after a trial week of dog-sitting a totally lovable bulldog for a week. You'll have to read the whole story to know: 1) Will she invite another permanent dog to be part of the family?, or, 2) Are her dog days over? Or can there be a surprise answer??? .Click on headline for the complete Part II, the final installment. Or is it?
Next earlier column: Carol Perkins: Dog sitting Winston. Part I

By Carol Perkins

-To continue with our dog sitter story, Guy didn't know the rules, so every time Winston went outside for any purpose, Guy gave him a treat. When Winston first jumped on the couch, we didn't scold him. We thought it cute that such a "rock" of a dog with legs no longer than his ears could jump that high. I put a blanket under him and he fell asleep, snored, and drooled. One time he jumped from the arm of the couch over to Guy's recliner, right into Guy's lap. Fifty pounds of solid dog in his lap was a sight to see. Guy patted him until Winston rooted Guy out of the chair. Fluffy had done the same thing.

Joyce Coomer: How easy to be duped by 'gluten free' label

Joyce M. Coomer writes
I find it amazing how easily consumers are duped by advertising and manufacturers. Unless a food is made from a grain source (wheat, barley, etc.) it should not contain gluten at all . . . sticking a "gluten free" label on apple cider vinegar, potato chips, canned yams, etc. is nothing more than a marketing ploy. By Dr. David "Mitchell" Sneed

COLUMBIA, KENTUCKY - there's "no place like home" for all of the people who love and have lived in Adair County. All the people that are still in the community show their love and caring nature in amazing ways. Individuals, families and businesses in Adair County have made it what it is today, and there are so many blessings found in the history of Columbia. The same may be said for my sister, Donna, and I, as our mom, Betty Ollestad, and Betty's Country Cooking are amongst those blessings. Our mom has been in business in Columbia for nearly 30 years and feels that service to God through her restaurant in Adair County is what she has always been meant to do.

Mary Knight joins Spoon Salad movement; is curious about Bragg

And she's curious about 'Bragg'

Mary Knight writes:
Ed and Linda--Does Martha Stewart know about you two? If not, your Spoon Salad, puts you all right up there with Martha. Such a great idea - can't wait to try it. Perfect to carry for lunch, and to use up some leftovers. Base of tomato juice and Bragg?? Tell this ignoramus from off about Bragg. Thanks - Mary knight
Mary Knight, thank you. Thank you - Our spoon salad was a Beta Test, and we're waiting for some real chefs to tell us about their own improvements. Bragg is "Bragg Organic Raw Unfiltered Apple Cider Vinegar - With the 'Mother'. Unpasteurized, Naturally Gluten Free." We get a 32 oz bottle, pour it in a cruet for the table, and then don't have to call 911 for a jaws of life to open one of those plasticky packages. Many take Bragg vinegar by the tablespoon one or more times a day, and claim health benefits. Anyway - hope you share your improvements on the basic idea of Spoon Salad. - EW
